Retail therapy is exactly that, whether it is a jacket, a shirt, a jumper or jeans. I love the experience of shopping. I love the extra detail and design in the zip pulls, patches or extra trims. I’m a huge fan of brand identity and the unique way that each business brings theirs to life. Detail is also one of the things I love most, when our customers bring us new or bespoke designs. Remember when H&M was the No. 1 fast fashion brand? 🤔💭 It wasn't 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 long ago that H&M was the go-to place to shop for affordable, trendy runway clothing. With Shein and Temu taking the fashion industry by storm for a few years already, H&M has been faced with the challenge of staying relevant and competitive. This is how the brand strategically plans on doing so: 🛍️ Implementing a wide range of retail prices with low-priced items, ‘pure demand’ items (middle range) and luxury or innovation items (premium). My expectation is that H&M will continue with their designer collaborations and will increase the number of collections designed with celebrities/influencers. 🏬 A new retail strategy which includes renovated stores (250 stores in 2024) with rental services and pre-loved items, as well as the launch of pop-up stores around the world. Pop-up stores include the Paris La Fayette flagship with a dedicated 186-square-meter space on the ground floor, and the Le Marais pop-up with an 850-square-meter space over two floors. 🎨 Optimizing the design process by giving full creative control to the product team, which streamlines decision-making. Local manufacturing capabilities are increased to improve responsiveness to trends and reduce lead times. 🎶 Using pop culture, music and architecture to strengthen the brand identity. H&M hosts a variety of live events to create buzz and maintain relevancy. Examples include the in-store atmosphere with curated musical playlists and live music events, such as the performance of Charli XCX at a glam party in London. I’m curious to see how H&M’s new creative vision further rolls out in the next year. The autumn 2024 collection already hints at a more design-focused, trendy direction.

What makes for a commercial product strategy in the fashion industry Part one Trend research is imperative for any company looking to create a sustainable product strategy. It should include valuable insight into current local customer demands and global market trends, insuring organisations can develop products that will drive growth, control markdown and maintain margin. Further read from our previous posts on LinkedIn : The Paradox of Choice, The 80/20 Principle and Essentialism Developing fashion trend information into a commercial product strategy needs to be integrated into the customer profile and market dynamics. This can only be done by the buying, merchandising, marketing and product planning teams all work in perfect harmony together ( or at least to the same focus ! ) A clear trialing strategy becomes imperative to establish which trends will be successful and which will not. Understanding and reading the analysis around these trails….all store v store grid trial, sizes, price v value, 3 week v 8 week; etc. are all part of a complex matrix that is imperative where OTB should be spent and where not ! Supply base becomes as an important part of the commercial strategy as the trend research… speed and agility to respond to early trials best enabled by the use of fabric platforms.
