Eichleay's Epic Historical Project On this #throwbackthursday, we take a moment to celebrate one of our most groundbreaking projects, a $1.5 billion project transforming Molycorp’s flagship mine to make it the most technologically advanced, energy-efficient, and environmentally superior rare earth production facility in the world. With a peak construction workforce of 1,200 and an ultra fast-track schedule, it is the largest and most complex project ever undertaken by Eichleay. Key components of this multi-year upgrade included crushing, milling, cracking, tailings facility and storage, separations, chlor-alkali plant, water and wastewater treatment, ancillary facilities, 50 MW combined heat and power plants, as well as significant power distribution, distributed utilities, and control systems infrastructure. Probably, you have been wondering how our basement size REE-enrichment plant is doing. Just fine, thank you! In case it slipped your mind, we constructed a pilot-scale facility designed to extract rare earth elements from mining wastewater. Because we need REE for the Green Transition, and because REE's aren't that rare - they just exist in very low concentrations. 📈 For zinc, utilized as a cost-effective substitute for REE, we attained an impressive 175-fold increase in concentration. To be compared with normal membranes which reach 10-15 times. ⚒ We accomplished up to 80% recovery of Neodymium and Yttrium from the feed. 💲 The carrier (the chemical substance which picks REE's like a pair of tweezers) loss, a crucial economic metric, was lower than theoretical predictions, indicating potential operational expenditure savings. 🥇 Initial comparisons indicate that our pilot surpasses the benchmark mixer-settler technology in terms of effectiveness and efficiency. Last week, we began a new phase of the project thanks to additional funding approved by the Mistra TerraClean program board, in which me and my colleagues at IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute (Kåre Tjus, Fredrik Hedman, Sandra Fischer, Christian Junestedt and Therese Kärnman) will further improve the pilot plant. Additionally, together with Ulrica Edlund, Niklas Hedin, Mats Sandberg and Martin Ragnar, we will explore the possibilities of pre-concentrating the REE using novel technologies.

An year ago I was invited to speak about the current state of art of #sustainability and #digitalinnovation for its realisation in the #builtenvironment in Europe and Germany in front of the German Bundestag (the German parliament). Alongside me was a brilliant scientists from Max Plank (being the person with the worst memory for names ever, I don’t remember his name, but the recording is still in the mediathek of the Bundestag) doing absolutely groundbreaking research on low-energy pyrolyse of concrete, which allows to demolish and then "reproduce" concrete in a way, which is more efficient and qualitative even compared to newly produced raw concrete from a concrete plant. This is critical, since it is estimated that between 3 and 6% of the global #carbonemissions come from lime mining and cement production alone. We had a lot to say. We had a lot to criticize. We had corrections and disproof of assumptions, half stories, numbers taken out of the global context, on which legislation is being built. In the past year, I saw many important and necessary steps done correcting the course and following in the right direction. And many steps backwards and adrift... I am preparing for “round two” in few weeks from now, at a round table on behalf of the German Bundeskanzler, and looking forward to it! #digitalgreen #AIforsustainability #digitalgreentwin #greenAI
