But let me tell you, intern life is WAY more exciting than that! 😄😄😄 While there are definitely times for those tasks (and trust me, we have mastered the art of the perfect latte!), interns are also tackling real responsibilities, contributing to meaningful projects, and making a real impact. So, next time you see an intern, remember they're more than just "the intern." We are the future of the industry, passionate, dedicated, and ready to make a difference. Ever worked with interns? Happy Interns Day! I spoke with one of my clients about the interns she has working with her this summer and she told me about a question she asked each of them recently. She asked each of them what they hadn't worked on yet but wanted to before the end of the summer. I think this is such an important thing to find out. Remember, you have the ability to help a young person determine their future path right now. Talk to your interns. Ask questions. Find out what they love and don't love. 🚀 Ever thought hiring an intern was more trouble than it's worth? Think again! 🔑 With the right groundwork and alignment of expectations, welcoming an intern into your team can be a game-changer—not just for them but also for you. 🤝 The intern-manager relationship is a two-way street. By providing the right environment and investing in their growth, you're gaining an extra pair of hands, fresh perspectives, and invaluable insights that can benefit your team. 💼 Internships aren't a drain. Flip the narrative and embrace them. With summer internships right around the corner, here are three actionable tips that have proven effective in maximizing the impact of interns on my team: 1. Invest in their onboarding. They're only with you for a short period and must ramp up quickly. Remember this and arm them with what they need to know to do their job well from day one. 2. Set clear expectations. This is often their first time in a professional setting for many interns. What do you expect them to deliver? What are their KPIs? Online hours? Depending on their level, give them a mix of rote tasks and a project. The project is a great resume-building opportunity for them! 3. Spend time with them. Get to know them and you'll be surprised at how much you'll learn and bonus, you'll both be building your network. I've gone on to hire many interns for full time roles! Thank you Four Rivers Society for Human Resource Management for hosting me yesterday! Speaking to such an amazing group of leaders is always an honor. The topic was Internships. I've spoken about internships/co-ops from the perspective of a Director of Career Development, but yesterday I had the chance to share from a new perspective - a private company view. Trust me when I say, there is a big difference! Higher education professionals often only ask, "How can companies create the best experience for their interns?" However, companies have to expand the question to: "How can we create the best experience for our interns, given our current constraints?" At BFW/Marcum, we had some unique constraints this summer on our team's time, energy, and focus. Hosting 15 interns at multiple locations can be challenging enough; add moving our headquarters and launching a new logo to the mix and you create more tensions to manage. Luckily, we have a great team who rallied to provide a great internship experience! It started by developing 3 extraordinary touchpoints. The last one is today as we say thank you to our phenomenal interns at our Closing Session!
