Tradition. Culture. Heritage. These are powerful words. They define who we are. They tell our story. But what happens when tradition clashes with compassion? Take bullfighting, for example. “Corrida de toros” in Spain. It’s been around for centuries. It’s part of the Spanish identity. Yet, it’s increasingly criticized for its cruelty. This isn’t just Spain’s issue. France has bullfighting. Portugal, too. In India, we have Jallikattu. Bulls released into crowds. People holding onto them. A symbol of bravery, yes. Fairy (Ferry) 🧚♀️🧚♀️and Folklore Tales of New Zealand The New Zealand connected national rail system with rail enabled ferries figure prominently in our national folklore, identity and place as a nation. The fairy tale story of Toby the dog from the 1990’s TV promo as he hitches a ride on cars, utes, Cook Strait ferries and trains down the length of the country epitomise this folklore as much as anything. https://lnkd.in/geYBib4r At nearly 10 minutes long it is well worth a full watch. So as our Coalition Government at Cabinet likely chooses from its Cook Strait ferry options today - is it going to be just two RoRo Ropax non enabled rail ferries - condemning over time the vast majority of national rail network to history to be just part of NZ folklore past to be seen in wistful clips such as this or clips in films like the scenes from the great classic Kiwi film Goodbye Pork Pie. Of course this is but one small impact of this decision with the real impact being much more profound and economic to our nation over time than a few fairy tale film flips. British wildlife TV presenter and conservationist Chris Packham joined Good Morning Britain this morning to talk about our #TravelWithKindness campaign and share tips on ethical travelling. Chris said, "if you are abroad, think about the attractions and experiences you will have. Is it ethical? If it isn't, don't buy that ticket. Secondly, please report the cruelties you witnessed to @AnimalsAsia. We are building a dossier of these kinds of interactions. This will enable us to take that back to the UK Government and ask them to make this law workable to protect those animals."
