Technology has many wonderful uses in education, but one of the most important uses is in creating more inclusive classrooms. With the way technology has expanded within the past decade, we now have endless resources for students with disabilities to be able to participate fully in every classroom. Some examples of this assistive technology include screen readers for students who may be visually impaired, captioning for students who are hard of hearing, and alternative keyboards for students who have a physical disability. They allow students with diverse needs to fully access the learning experience within their classrooms and allows us as teachers to create a more equitable learning environment. A11y Tip Tuesday – A Huge Need (154 words| reading time: <1 minute) “The 7.3 million disabled students in the U.S. made up 15% of national public school enrollment during the 2021–2022 school year.” (Pew Research) Digital accessibility allows students with disabilities, such as visual or hearing impairments, learning disabilities, or mobility challenges, to fully participate in and benefit from online learning materials, activities, and platforms. Ensuring digital accessibility helps schools meet legal requirements and avoid discrimination lawsuits. Digital accessibility promotes equity by ensuring that all students have the same access to educational resources and opportunities. Digital accessibility benefits not only students with disabilities but also those with diverse learning styles and preferences. For example, captions on videos benefit students who are deaf or hard of hearing, as well as students who prefer to read along while watching. As a teacher candidate, an educator, and a mother of a daughter with ADHD and a mild learning disability, I have seen firsthand how technology can truly be an equalizer in education. For my daughter, using educational technology has been a game-changer in helping her manage her learning challenges while boosting her self-esteem. As a student and as an aspiring educator, I believe that technology in the classroom is amazing. It offers unique tools and resources allowing instruction to be more accesssible and more engaging especially for students with disabilities. Another reason why I believe it is amazing is because it allows students to learn and work at their own pace.
