CC has worked in partnership with Essex County Council and Saffron Walden County High School to pilot a scheme aimed at reducing barriers faced by students with special educational needs and disabilities when accessing the STEM workforce. Last week, we had the pleasure of welcoming six work-experience students, aged 17 to 18, from Saffron Walden County High School. Over the week, the students participated in everything from team-building exercises and meeting with our CEO to designing antennas and programming robots. This pilot allowed us to gain valuable experience and knowledge in creating an accessible scheme. The training beforehand and the hands-on experience gained during the students' visit will allow us to shape our outreach even more effectively in the future. #STEM #SEND #OutReach #WorkExperience #Students

Technology has many wonderful uses in education, but one of the most important uses is in creating more inclusive classrooms. With the way technology has expanded within the past decade, we now have endless resources for students with disabilities to be able to participate fully in every classroom. Some examples of this assistive technology include screen readers for students who may be visually impaired, captioning for students who are hard of hearing, and alternative keyboards for students who have a physical disability. They allow students with diverse needs to fully access the learning experience within their classrooms and allows us as teachers to create a more equitable learning environment. The examples listed above are only a few of the many that are available; you can visit the article below to read about more examples. #AssistiveTechnology #InclusiveEducation

A11y Tip Tuesday – A Huge Need (154 words| reading time: <1 minute) “The 7.3 million disabled students in the U.S. made up 15% of national public school enrollment during the 2021–2022 school year.” (Pew Research) Digital accessibility allows students with disabilities, such as visual or hearing impairments, learning disabilities, or mobility challenges, to fully participate in and benefit from online learning materials, activities, and platforms. Ensuring digital accessibility helps schools meet legal requirements and avoid discrimination lawsuits. Digital accessibility promotes equity by ensuring that all students have the same access to educational resources and opportunities. Digital accessibility benefits not only students with disabilities but also those with diverse learning styles and preferences. For example, captions on videos benefit students who are deaf or hard of hearing, as well as students who prefer to read along while watching. Overall, digital accessibility in public schools is essential for fostering an inclusive, equitable, and supportive learning environment where every student has the opportunity to thrive and succeed. #a11y #accessibility #AccessibilityMatters #DigitalAccessibility #EquitableLearning

As a teacher candidate, an educator, and a mother of a daughter with ADHD and a mild learning disability, I have seen firsthand how technology can truly be an equalizer in education. It has the power to open doors for students with mobility, hearing, vision, or cognitive challenges, giving them the tools to engage in learning and feel confident in their abilities. 💻 Assistive technology doesn’t just accommodate disabilities; it levels the playing field, allowing children to thrive in ways they might not have been able to otherwise. From voice synthesizers to text enlargement and learning software, these innovations are giving students opportunities to participate fully in the classroom and beyond. For my daughter, using educational technology has been a game-changer in helping her manage her learning challenges while boosting her self-esteem. As I prepare to become a Teacher, I’m excited to leverage these tools to create inclusive learning environments where all students can succeed. Technology is not just a tool — it’s a pathway to opportunity for all learners. 🌟 #AssistiveTechnology #InclusiveEducation #TeacherCandidate #EarlyChildhoodEducation #ADHDAwareness #LearningDisabilities #EqualAccess #EdTech
