Founder & CEO of Viable Solutions LLC-Fetal Echo Education Consultant | Maternal Fetal Medicine Sonographer
When I first started scanning as an MFM sonographer, I did not have a clear understanding of WHY I was assessing the fetal heart. I only knew what images to obtain and even that was dodgy. Cine clips were definitely not on my fetal heart agenda. No one told me how important they are, or why they are necessary to demonstrate normal and abnormal structures. Something we have to get retrain ourselves is to just “take the picture” and move on. That’s not enough. We must be diligent when assessing the fetal heart and really take the time to watch the atrioventricular and semilunar valves. To make sure we visualize the pulmonary artery exiting the right ventricle as it crosses the aorta anteriorly, to help rule out transposition of the great arteries. Sonographers play a vital role in direct patient care, so they deserve more than being told to just “take the pictures”. We need to know the “why”, so we can provide the best diagnostic images we can. We also need to be up to date with the best practices. Cine clips are very important and I always advise sonographers to utilize this practice. Even if your system won’t allow you to capture many cine clips due to storage, get in the habit of sweeping through the heart and sitting still and just watching the heart squeeze and the valves move…these habits will help you fully assess the fetal heart to the best of your ability. 🫀 #sonographereducation #cineclips #educationsaveslives (Cine clip demonstrating the normal orientation of the great arteries)

You might be wondering why I posted this skull radiograph. Are you looking for a fracture line or a lytic/sclerotic lesion?? This is a normal skull radiograph of a 15 years old female patient who presented after sustaining a slap by one of her class mates. The optimist part of my brain was considering .... He might be way much older than her age with well built body or she might has fallen on the ground after the incident ....What I have heard so far is multiple skull fracture from a box kick. Nothing more, I was not expecting fracture from a slap. I asked the radiology technologists who took the history, it was just a slap. Then, what was the reason to have a skull radiograph?? What am I looking for exactly?? It is not few patients that I face at my work place who come asking for a self requested radiograph or CT scan. Thank's to God, it is not allowed to have these examination by patients request in the setup where am working. Investigations associated with radiation should be requested by the primary healthcare physician whenever it is found important for the sake of diagnosis with limited exposures. This is where the ALARA - As Low As Reasonably Achievable - principle should be applied. Dear patients please avoid these examinations unless it is a must to have it. Let's all work for the betterment of the service. Let's avoid unnecessary radiation exposure!! #radiation #xray #xraytech #xraymachine #ctscan #cttechnologist #radiationprotection #radiology #radiologia #radiologist #radiologytech #healthcare #healthawareness #medicalcommunity #tips

Happy Ultrasound Awareness Month! Medical Ultrasound Awareness Month (MUAM) is celebrated every October to raise awareness of medical ultrasound and the role of sonographers in healthcare. The month also provides an opportunity for ultrasound professionals to educate the public and celebrate their profession. Ultrasound utilizes sound waves with frequencies higher than the upper audible limit of the human ear and is measured in hertz (Hz). In the early 1970s, the use of ultrasound (high frequency mechanical energy waves, like sound waves only with a higher frequency) as a means of creating images of the abdomen, small parts, and pelvis was introduced at radiology meetings and in the literature. Ultrasound represented a major advance in diagnostic imaging because it allowed the creation of cross-sectional images without the use of ionizing radiation. Here at InterMed, our general Ultrasound department performs approximately 9,000 exams per year. #CareWithoutCompromise

To my cardiac sonographer friends (part eight ): *Right Parasternal View * Right parasternal view is valuable in the evaluation of the aortic root and ascending aorta; when these are dilated. Also ,this window is excellent view for profiling the superior and inferior vena cavae as they drain into the right atrium and profiling the Inter Atrial Septum(IAS). To do ,the probe (perpendicular to the chest wall)is placed in the second or third intercostal space at the right stemal edge, one intercostal space higher than that used for the standard left parastemal window,,then the probe marker is rotated toward the patient's left clavicle at approximately the 1 o'clock position (the same way as for imaging of the suprastemal Long Axis of the aorta),now to image the aorta), the probe is angled approximately 45° to the chest wall(thus, the probe is parallel to the long axis of the proximal ascending aorta). To image the IAS, the probe is angled towards the patient right, the atria. the IAS, and the superior and inferior vena cavae may be seen (in this view the IAS is oriented perpendicular to the ultrasound beam). #cardilogy #echocardiography

A 25-year-old male presented to the emergency department with a two-week history of severe headache, a large palpable neck mass, vision problems, and heavy shoulder pain following a gunshot injury before. Ultrasound revealed a markedly dilated common carotid artery with turbulent flow and mixed colors on color Doppler, suggesting a possible carotid artery aneurysm. CT of the head and neck was recommended to confirm the diagnosis, assess the extent of the aneurysm, and evaluate for any associated injuries. POV: Ultrasound can help identify potential complications, such as blood clots within the aneurysm or leakage of blood (hemorrhage). Early detection of these complications is crucial for timely intervention and prevention of serious consequences. #radiographer #Sonographer #vascularsurgeons #Radiologist #EmergencyMedicine
