Every year, 1.35 million lives are lost globally due to road crashes. Of these fatalities, 44,000 occur in the US, making it one of the most dangerous countries among developed nations. Fatalities continue to rise. Over the last 15 years, car-related fatalities rose by 20%. How can we reduce highway fatalities by 30% by 2030? Steven Kiefer, Chairman of the CMT Road Safety Board and founder of The Kiefer Foundation, discusses the steps required to make this goal a reality in Automotive News. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and other members of the Road to Zero Coalition are urging automakers, regulators and fleet operators to promote intelligent speed assistance (ISA) and speed limiters to help curb an epidemic of speeding that has contributed to a spike in traffic deaths since 2020. “Speeding causes more than a quarter of all crash deaths every year, accounting for more than 12,000 lost lives in 2021,” said Jessica Cicchino, vice president of research at IIHS. “In-vehicle technologies can be an important part of the solution.” ISA uses a camera that reads posted signs or GPS mapping software to identify the prevailing speed limit and alerts drivers when they’re going too fast. Some systems also discourage speeding more aggressively by reducing power to the engine once the driver crosses the limit. #fleet #safety #fleetsafety #roadsafety #drivedifferent #smithsystem In-vehicle alerts, speed limiters needed to curb epidemic of aggressive driving (iihs.org)

Road accidents continue not to decrease globally. Since the beginning of 2024, we have had more than 724 thousand traffic fatalities, according to the WHO. By the end of the year, we will have more than 1.35 million traffic deaths. The work of the UN, the World Bank, the WHO, the FIA and those who follow their instructions, is not producing results, for the objectives they set out, just like the results of the decade of road safety from 2011 to 2020. It seems that many activities profit from this tragedy! We have many examples of strong reductions, in many countries, in recent decades. But we have countries that, after significant decreases, saw their victims increase again. We must analyze why the falls occurred, what changed and once again, implement measures that produce good results. But is human error excused by infrastructure and the vehicle? No, they will never be enough, road users must know more and have better driving skills in cars and 2-wheeled vehicles! Recent research from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) reveals that drivers are adapting to partial automation systems in ways that undermine safety features. Drivers often multitask, sometimes exploiting the systems’ attention reminders to skirt their safety mechanisms. This study shows a growing need for improved safeguards in these systems to prevent misuse and ensure driver engagement. Read more >> https://lnkd.in/ehuwSkGv

It's clear that as we've made vehicles safer over the past few decades, we've seen some really impressive outcomes. But one thing is for sure - we can't just hit pause on making them even safer. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety / Highway Loss Data Institute's move to establish more stringent standards to motivate car manufacturers to strive for greater safety levels is truly welcome. https://hubs.li/Q02qdCX00 #SafetyFirst #futureofsafety #WeareHumanetics
