Reflecting on a pivotal moment in scientific publishing, the release of "Looking back at the timely launch of Nature Structural Biology in 1994" offers profound insight into the evolutionary trajectory of structural biology. Published online on 28 November 2024, this article highlights the significant achievements that unfolded after the journal's inception, notably its role in advancing our understanding of molecular mechanisms at the atomic level. Nature Structural Biology, now Nature Structural & Molecular Biology, emerged during a time when the field was rapidly gaining momentum. This journal played a crucial role in providing a dedicated platform for pioneering research, facilitating global collaboration, and influencing a generation of scientific discovery. The retrospective also honors the contributions of influential figures like Christian Cambillau, whose work has significantly shaped the field. Gerty Cori uncovered the process of cellular energy storage and release, answering one of the most fundamental questions about how the human body works. In so doing, she and her husband and lifelong research partner, Carl, transformed the study of biology, proving that the clarity of molecular chemistry could and should be applied to the opaque mechanisms of biology. Cori was awarded the 1947 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. She was the first woman to be awarded the medicine prize. Learn more: https://bit.ly/2IgxsRF

FEATURED MBoC ASSOCIATE EDITOR: Claire Walczak - Indiana University School of Medicine-Bloomington How can MBoC benefit researchers in your area? “MBoC is the journal of the American Society of Cell Biology. It represents our field and is led and run by a team of outstanding scientists. The goal is to publish high-quality science that defines in the broadest sense of how cell biology impacts many areas of science. It is important that as society members we support this journal with great work from our own lab and encourage colleagues to do the same. MBoC also supports the principles of DORA in evaluating every paper on its own merit.” https://lnkd.in/gKuGp-Bi

Vacation on your mind? This tropical scene is actually a petri dish containing an artistic arrangement of genetically engineered bacteria. The image showcases eight of the fluorescent proteins created in the laboratory of the late Roger Y. Tsien, a cell biologist at UC San Diego. Tsien, along with Osamu Shimomura of the Marine Biology Laboratory and Martin Chalfie of Columbia University, share the 2008 The Nobel Prize in chemistry for their work on green fluorescent protein-a naturally glowing molecule from jellyfish that has become a powerful tool for studying molecules inside living cells. Had to share this! Professor #BrandonOgbunu's lecture on the importance of providing context in biology research was truly energizing! He shared personal experiences, perspective, and vision, making it a valuable session. This lecture was the most recent from the Santa Fe Institute's Community Lectures -- a great benefit of living in Santa Fe. (Check them out at santafe.edu) By the way, #JayshreeSeth, 3M's Chief Science Advocate, has often emphasized the significance of context in science. I hope we all agree that we need more scientists who not only "get it" but can also explain it! #biology #research #science #SantaFeInstitute https://lnkd.in/eFmbrJcE

Sometimes taking a risk pays off! As an incentive to address complex problems using creative, non-standard approaches, the Vienna BioCenter PhD Program awards an annual stipend for designing the best curiosity-driven, high-risk experiment. This year Eva Kroetenheerdt from Max Perutz Labs Vienna and Julia Kober from the Gregor Mendel Institute were recognized with the "Out of the Box" Award for proposing a highly original approach to investigate a long-standing question in kinase biology: Can kinases autophosphorylate in cis? We celebrate this cooperation between two recent PhD graduates, crossing institute borders at Vienna BioCenter! FEATURED MBoC ASSOCIATE EDITOR: Christian Ungermann - University of Osnabrueck How can MBoC benefit researchers in your area? “MBoC provides a broad spectrum of cell biology literature, an excellent reviewing system, and a high-profile editorial board reflecting all different disciplines in cell biology. The papers are of high quality and many of them milestones in the field. MBoC papers should be guidelines of solid and high-quality research without aiming for the highest impact factor, but the most reliable and informative research in its field.” https://lnkd.in/gKuGp-Bi
