Default decisions are the choices you make in your business that you don't notice making. They’re your preconceived notions about how your business should run. What software you use, how you pay your team, how you get paid by clients. They can have a dramatic impact on your business design and business model - than means it impact how your business looks and feels like to run. And the #1 best tool to identify where the default decisions are in your business is simply a question. “Why?” • Why are you pricing your services the way you are? • Why are you accepting payments from clients the way you are? • Why did you choose your project management software? If the answer to any of those questions are… • Because that’s the way my industry does it • Because that’s the way we’ve always done it • I don’t know … then it’s probably a decision you made by default. And it’s worth reexamining that choice to make sure it’s the best one for the business you want to run. Not the business you think you should run.

$50 Million - that’s how much one of our customers saved by consolidating software into Quickbase. They replaced a few homegrown systems, a few “collaborative work management” platforms, project management, and one very expensive COTS license. Commercial-off-the-shelf software has had a good run in manufacturing with wild gross margins and not a lot of innovation, because they could. There’s most certainly a shortage of developers in the industry because finance and tech pay more, so almost nobody wants to or can build their own full stack solutions, let alone converge the IT/OT chasm. The workforce is turning over. It’s more transient and there are different expectations about how we ought to interact with tech at work. People expect interoperability, real time information, and simplicity. There’s a huge opportunity that the best companies will take to consolidate software using no code tools that have the depth of capability they need but also deliver on the citizen developer promise. The barriers were too high. They’re not anymore. As you assess your own software rationalization and consolidation, you have to have a plan for how to get it right. These are the keys: simplicity, centers of excellence that involve the business and IT, interoperability, master data strategy, change management, project management, performance & scale, application lifecycle management, and governance.
