🌍 Not Every Meeting Achieves the Initial Goal—But It Can Still Be Valuable 🏗️ This week, we met with a potential client whose vans, scaffolding, and cranes are a familiar sight across Scotland and the North of England. Having been involved in the construction of some of Manchester, Glasgow, and Leeds’ most iconic buildings, their work has helped shape the urban landscape for over 15 years. As their focus is on fitting and managing projects—using designs developed by external teams—they aren’t currently eligible for R&D relief or grants. However, through our discussions, we identified potential routes to complement their strategic inward investment. Mass Timber and Fire Safe Design do not need to be mutually exclusive. In recent years, the construction industry has seen a surge in interest in mass timber as an innovative and sustainable building material. Fire safety is crucial, so how can we ensure that large scale timber buildings are fire-safe? We’ve at Arup have drawn on decades of global fire safety research, including our own large-scale mass timber experimental series, to formulate risk-based guidance. This serves as a resource to be used by anyone involved in the design and construction of mass timber buildings and has already informed the fire safety for multiple buildings. 💭 Tall buildings are the icons of cities, rising above skylines as awe-inspiring structures. The view of and from these magnificent buildings can be breathtaking. And practically, they provide a vast amount of space in high-demand urban areas, says Chris Edgington, building engineer at Arup. "Engineering buildings that are tall just for the purpose of vanity is no longer enough. Future buildings must be made with occupant safety and the planet in mind, both during construction and while in use," writes Edgington. "As cities grow, and demand on space becomes starker, the industry has a huge responsibility to provide buildings that serve the city’s environment and residents."
