Wanted to share a compilation of fascinating research and statistics about the realities of women’s labor force participation pre-and-post-pandemic. Exciting news! Applications for the second phase of England's largest ever expansion of free childcare are open from the 12th of May! Starting from that date, eligible working parents with children as young as 9 months can register for 15 hours of free childcare each week, with the program beginning in September 2024. With this rollout, hundreds of thousands of parents will receive support for the first time, potentially saving families nearly £7,000 a year when the full 30 hours become available in September 2025. Numerous organizations gathered at the Capitol to urge lawmakers to increase investment in childcare. Leaders from the Early Childhood Investment Corporation and Think Babies Michigan highlighted critical issues such as “childcare deserts,” high costs, and the need for fair wages for childcare workers. They argue that current state funding is inadequate and exacerbates these problems. Addressing these issues would benefit not only childcare providers but also the broader workforce, helping parents balance work and family responsibilities. Advocates also seek funding for paid family leave, noting that 59,000 parents in Michigan have either left or declined jobs due to childcare concerns. Despite many families struggling to find affordable childcare, more than 60% of childcare workers report struggling to cover basics like food and utilities. This reveals the exploitative nature of the industry and the need for real advocacy and policy changes to support access to childcare.
