NAIDOC Week offers a meaningful opportunity to celebrate and honour the traditional custodians of our beautiful country. The 2024 theme honours the enduring strength and vitality of First Nations culture – with fire a symbol of connection to Country, to each other, and to the rich tapestry of traditions that define Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Simple acts like displaying the National NAIDOC poster or learning the traditional place names of our cities—such as Naarm (Melbourne), Meanjin (Brisbane), Warrane (Sydney), and Boorloo (Perth)—are great ways to show respect and engage with Indigenous cultures. One of the most impactful ways to acknowledge NAIDOC Week is by inviting Indigenous speakers, Elders, and representatives to your events. Their contributions can include Welcome to Country ceremonies, educational talks, comedy shows, or musical performances. These interactions allow us to learn about Indigenous communities' rich cultural practices, beliefs, and traditions, enhancing our relationship with the world around us. Why Have a First Nations Australian Speaker at Your Event? Centering voices with lived experience is crucial for any event focusing on Australia’s traditional custodians. Only Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people can perform a Welcome to Country, though anyone can perform an Acknowledgement of Country. Some of Australia’s most prominent figures in sport and other fields are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. These speakers provide unique perspectives on sport, diversity, and inclusion, making your event more inspiring, enriching and impactful. Some topics that Dean Widders is passionate about: • His journey as an Indigenous rugby league player and advocate • His mission to create the historic NRL INDIGENOUS ALL-STARS pre-game War Cry • The importance of reconciliation and social justice • The power of sport to unite people • The importance of leadership and teamwork • Facilitation of Yarning Circles for your organisation or team Some topics Taylah Gray is passionate about include: • The importance of defending civil rights and liberties • The nuances of Aboriginal culture and justice • The intricacies of Native Title and land reform Contact us to book Dean or Taylah to elevate your NAIDOC celebrations. #naidoc #keynotespeaker #yarningcircle

🚨 News from the AFC Annual Conference 🚨 The latest findings reveal stark disparities in funding between men’s and women’s football, exposing systemic inequalities within the sport. The AFC Champions League received USD 33.8 million, while the AFC Women’s Club Championship got only USD 0.9 million. This inequitable distribution contradicts the principles of fairness and equality that should underpin all sports. It’s time to address these imbalances and ensure equal opportunities for women in football. Let's work together for a more equitable and inclusive future. ⚽️💪 Read the full article to learn more about the challenges and the path forward: https://wix.to/pUR0nDd

It's almost here! I've gotten some questions about what makes this session so unmissable, and I think it's largely due to the lineup - getting this kind of diverse expertise in one place, and in a format that allows sports professionals from all over the world to meet and learn from each other, is not common. Catherine P. Khayran Noor Marion Keim and I are excited to bring information to the participants that looks at human rights in sports in a true global way. We have today announced our updated Inspiring Generations strategy for the next four years. The strategy details cricket’s vision to become the most inclusive team sport in England and Wales, while at the same time growing and uniting the game and leading it through global transformation. Everyone within the game - including the county network and our partners - will be focused on delivering action plans that underpin the updated Inspiring Generations strategy. The publication of several of these action plans was recommended by the Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket, and they set out in more detail how we will address issues identified by the ICEC Report. Key actions include: • Boosting cricket in state secondary schools by training hundreds of secondary school teachers. • Investing £3.5m into the most ethnically diverse areas of England and Wales by 2027 • Increasing the number of young volunteers by 50%, adding 3,500 young people by 2028 • Training thousands of staff and volunteers in anti-discrimination and inclusion https://lnkd.in/eWjQGpUb

What is the point of winning if you can win only by CHEATING, DESTROYING, LYING, or MURDERING the competitors psychologically or physically? It has always bothered me to watch somebody academicians win by preventing, blocking, or destroying the advances of other academicians who are as good or better. They do this by writing bad reviews of papers, scientific importance of work, or undermining them by preventing/stopping their participation in international conferences. They are able to do that because they are often president, scientifique director, or secretaries of small organizations where they get to decide the scientists who get invited to their organizations’ meetings. Engaging in DISINFORMATION campaigns against scientists of African descent have also worked well. If we want to win, Let us do so like true knights. Let us win by putting the efforts Every minute of days and nights With our focus always on the targets. If you want to win, Please do so in ways That taught you a lot About yourself Even if you lose. If we want to win, Let’s win because of our own dedication, But never afraid to ask for help when we need it most. Let’s win in ways That our smiles always Reflect our courageous and giving selves. Let us win in ways that, On the sounding of the final bell tolls, Our hearts will be HAPPY That we had stayed true to ourselves Even during the most heated and somber periods of our search for self-realization.
Kenyan runner Abel Mutai was only a few meters from the finish line, but got confused with the signs and stopped, thinking he had finished the race. A Spanish man, Ivan Fernandez, was right behind him and, realizing what was going on, started shouting to the Kenyan to keep running. Mutai did not know Spanish and did not understand. Realizing what was going on, Fernandez pushed Mutai to victory. A reporter asked Ivan, "Why did you do this?" Ivan replied, "My dream is that one day we can have some sort of community life where we push ourselves and help each other win." The reporter insisted "But why did you let the Kenyan win?" Ivan replied, "I didn't let him win, he was going to win. The race was his." The reporter insisted and asked again, "But you could have won!" Ivan looked at him and replied: "But what would be the merit of my victory? What would be the honor of this medal? What would my Mother think of it?" The values are transmitted from generation to generation. What values do we teach our children and how much do you inspire others to earn? Most of us take advantage of people's weaknesses instead of helping to strengthen them. Source: SOKP

A focus on feminist theory/ies in relation to sport governance is an absolutely essential intervention. This is all the more important a) in addressing the systemic discriminatory factors in sport governance [sport governance, after all, is a cradle of what the late Dr bell hooks described as the imperialist capitalist white supremacist cisheteropatriarchy], and b) in the current context, where sport governance as a whole is faced with polarizing, reductive, dehumanizing and deeply problematic discourses.
Next week Tuesday 9 July we have the honour to host the brilliant Adele Pavlidis at the T.M.C. Asser Instituut in The Hague, for a talk on #feministtheories on #sportgovernance, with case studies of Australian rules football and roller derby. Comments on her talk will be given by Antoine Duval and Åsa Ekvall, PhD, before we turn to the audience for Q&A Come by if you're around, or join the discussion online! The Arrangement for Cooperation (https://shorturl.at/oV7NR) recognizes the outstanding efforts of the European Olympic Committees - EOC and European Olympic Committees EU Office - EOC EU Office in leading EU-funded projects on topical areas to concretely implement key EU policies and recommendations. It should be acknowledged that the Erasmus Plus Programme plays a key role in providing organised sports with the required financial means to implement the set objectives of the Arrangement for Cooperation, and to: ➡ enhance physical activity through campaigns like #BeActive and HealthyLifestyle4All. ➡ promote sustainability, human rights, athletes' well-being, integrity and gender equality in sports ➡ encourage volunteering and skills and competencies development through sport ➡ ensuring the principles of safe sports, fairness, inclusiveness, respect and unity in sport ➡ enhance access to sports for youth and disadvantaged groups, including persons with disabilities. ➡ promote positive and lasting legacies from sports events and EU and Olympic values beyond the EU. Thus, the Erasmus Plus Programme is a key ally in promoting European Union and Olympic values within and beyond the borders of the European Union as it provides important resources to implement cross-border initiatives leading to concrete, sustainable and transferable outputs, and lasting legacies 🎉

Current Community Grants project highlight - The Bayfirth Research CIC (in partnership with Scottish Women & Girls’ Cricket Research Network and Cricket Scotland) 🔵2028 is a significant year for cricket in Scotland as it marks 150 years since the first recorded cricket match for women and girls was played. 🔵A small group of pioneers laid the foundations for women’s and girl’s cricket in Scotland today, and this project will enable those involved to tell their stories for the first time, share their memories and present a history of Scottish women’s and girls’ cricket in Scotland through a touring exhibition. 🔵Volunteers will be trained to capture and upload memories to an online memory map, mostly as oral histories. 🔵The project will involve the Scottish women’s cricket community, including the national women’s team who have just qualified for the Women’s T20 World Cup, and the global (and Olympic) audience. 🔵The aims of the project include enabling women and girls in Scotland to take their place in the cricketing world, revealing and publishing the untold histories of a critical time – when the sport’s governing body officially recognised the national team and developing long-lasting outputs which celebrate and share this heritage. Find out more: www.bayfirth.co.uk Note: Community Grant Round 3 funding is coming soon, sign up for our newsletter to be informed of all the latest information.
