🌍 Ecological Citizenship Starts Young 🌱 This year, I set my school an important mission: To become a nature-based special school, where teachers view the outdoors as an extension of the classroom just as much as the indoors. Our goal is to foster ecological citizenship from a young age, helping students develop a deep, lasting connection to the natural world. We’re beginning this journey by encouraging teachers to integrate nature into their daily practice, whether through outdoor learning or nature-inspired projects. I’ve recently reviewed our plans for next year, where staff will focus on refreshing the curriculum to ensure clear threads of nature. This includes developing a climate curriculum and empowering students to grow into the eco-aware citizens of tomorrow. When students experience the environment directly, they begin to see themselves as stewards of the planet. Nature-based education doesn’t just build knowledge; it fosters responsibility, empathy, and a lifelong commitment to conservation and sustainability. 🌱 How do you integrate environmental lessons in your work? 🌍 New Insights from Cornell University & NAAEE's Panel on Environmental Education & Civic Engagement 🌍 This dynamic panel explored the role of environmental education in fostering civic engagement, and highlighted the importance of democratizing environmental governance to ensure sustainable and equitable outcomes. Highlights from presentations: 🌿 Oliver Escobar: Discussed the power of political, economic, and public imagination, showing how environmental education and civic engagement can drive democratic innovations and support collective actions based on ecological values and justice. 🌿 Emily Fano: Highlighted the critical role of intergenerational civic engagement, focusing on advocacy as a tool to empower youth to collaborate with state legislatures and educational leaders in promoting climate education. 🌿 Amarachukwu (Amara) Ifeji: Demonstrated the impact of youth engagement in policy development, particularly how young leaders who are most impacted are successfully advancing transformational climate education initiatives. 🌿 Gitanjali Paul: Focused on systems thinking to enhance civic engagement, explaining how this approach helps students, educators, and community members grasp complex sustainability issues and foster effective environmental actions. 🌿 Taylor Ruffin: Presented the Environmental Action Civics framework, describing methods to engage youth in local environmental issues through shared decision-making and community collaboration. Check out this report by Jack Petchey Foundation on the #environment, questioning nearly 4,000 young people: - 96% of respondents think young people should be involved in decision making about the environment - #School/#college is the place that young people engage most with information and action around environmental issues (63%) - However, less than half of young people have dedicated lessons on the environment at school and 2 in 3 young people would like to see more environmental #education prioritised in the curriculum - More schools do not have adequate green space (43%) than do (31%), according to students - Young people would like more school trips to engage with #nature, this was their top recommendation for schools to engage students (55% of young people prioritised this) - Young people told us directly what they would like #funders to do for young people and the environment, including recognising those helping the environment more

🌍 EYES on Earth live from Alexandria! 🌍 A few weeks ago, my hometown city of Alexandria hosted the impactful "EYES ON EARTH" campaign event, organized by EU NEIGHBOURS SOUTH in collaboration with Banlastic and Greenish, at Kaumeya Language Schools. This event was a remarkable success, drawing enthusiastic participation from students and strong support from the school administration. 🌱 **Event Highlights** 🌱 🔹 Active Administration Engagement: The #KLS played a pivotal role in the event success, encouraging a significant turnout of students eager to learn and engage. 🔹 Dynamic Student Participation: Students aged 12-16 showcased incredible enthusiasm, delving into entrepreneurial solutions for water scarcity and plastic pollution. 🔹 Insightful Discussions:bThe students posed challenging questions about environmental impacts and opportunities, highlighting the need for increased awareness and action. 🔹 Curricular Support Request:The administration expressed interest in developing curricula that promote community engagement, leadership, and entrepreneurial skills, inspired by successful collaborations with local ROTARY and INTERACT chapters. 🌍 The future is ours 🌍 The event highlighted the importance of education in fostering environmental stewardship among young people. The students' active participation and insightful inquiries signal a promising future for environmental advocacy. Step-by-step Solutions: Tackling Challenges in Rural Schools During our school mentorship and environmental education programs for children in rural areas, we prioritize having in-depth discussions with the school heads. This helps us understand the various issues facing these children. Among the problems identified, teenage pregnancies stand out; for instance, one school reported seven cases some time back and four cases two years ago. Economic constraints are another significant challenge. These private conversations with the head teachers are crucial as they provide us with insights and guide our approach when interacting with the students. Each school and rural area has unique issues, and while we cannot address all their needs, my team of volunteers and I do our best to mentor the children and emphasize the importance of education. Additionally, we plant fruit trees at the schools, which will eventually provide the children with free, nutritious snacks during their lunch breaks. The potential in these children is immense, but due to their remote locations, they often lack the exposure and motivation that can be found in urban areas. It is encouraging to maintain contact with the school heads year after year and hear about the positive impact of our mentorship. For example, the number of students progressing to high school has been steadily improving. As a climate scientist, I am particularly excited about the children's growing involvement in environmental conservation once they learn more about it. This aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals of ending poverty, achieving zero hunger, and taking climate action. I urge everyone to return to their rural homes and support future generations!

It’s more than just a subject—it’s a way of life, teaching us to act responsibly for the sustainability of our planet. By incorporating environmental creativity and innovation into children's education, we shape their minds to grow with eco-consciousness, fostering lasting behavior change. This year’s theme, 'Empowering Change through Environmental Education,' reminds us that the future of our planet is shaped in the classrooms of today. As we train children to value the Earth, we are securing a sustainable future for all.
