Your local Chamber and BIA are instrumental in building strong economies.     I had a bit of an “AH-HA” moment during one of my previous business meetings with a potential client. The conversation led to him telling me how he despises going to local business events because people are always trying to sell him something. I took a long pause, put my past Chamber Director hat on and told him, “I ardently disagreed with his statement - What’s wrong with local businesses people trying to sell you something”?  He really should have known better being a successful businessperson himself knowing that the backbone of his business was dependent on his business making sales.     I’m not here to compare which association is better - they both are good and bring excellence to the communities that they serve. As a past leader in the community media business, I have seen first-hand the value that strong Chambers and vibrant BIAs bring to the business community. The road of an entrepreneur is an extremely lonely endeavour, and these organizations create tremendous resources and a rock-solid support network for your business to become successful.   The local Chamber is funded mostly through memberships and brings tremendous value to local businesses through advocation, policy, networking events, business training programs and providing a first-class benefit program to its members. I was a proud Chamber Director at The South Surrey & White Rock Chamber for seven years and there was nothing like attending a local Chamber event and taking part in some of the amazing networking opportunities and support the Chamber gives to businesses. Dollar for dollar being a Chamber member is one of the best investments you can make for your business. The more you get involved, the more value you are going to see.   BIAs are supported by local governments and deal with sponsorship events, advocating, marketing, networking events and bringing business development to their respective community hub.  The BIA’s position in their respective marketplace can be instrumental and you can see that with the many events and marketing initiatives that they host in their communities to help drive local business. Many downtown cores are strategically supported by BIAs, and you can see the positive transformational developments that are taking place through their support.    My above “AH-HA” moment most certainly cost me a sale, but it was totally worth it.  I encourage every businessperson to get involved in their local Chamber and BIA, and for all to support local businesses when they need to purchase goods, or services. Next time you attend a local business event take the initiative to go network with someone. It might even turn into to a sale, or better yet, an “AH-HA” moment- and that’s okay by me.    The full version of this piece was published at www.hokuconsulting.com
