The Pedestrian Experience ++ [city ideas] improving the pedestrian experience in a city commercial corridor is crucial for enhancing the quality of life for residents and visitors, supporting economic development, and creating a vibrant and sustainable urban environment. It is important for city planners and policymakers to prioritize pedestrian-friendly design elements in order to create thriving and livable city centers. Elements that contribute to an aesthetically appealing corridor: *smooth pavement, well-kept sidewalks, and functional streetlights and traffic signals. *Trees, plants, and green spaces along the street can enhance the beauty of an urban environment and provide shade and clean air. *Street art, sculptures, and murals can add color and creativity to a streetscape. *Cleanliness *Historic character

A city skyline is the iconic silhouette of a city's buildings, landmarks, and structures as viewed from a distance, especially during the evening or night when illuminated by artificial lights. It represents the architectural identity and urban landscape of a city, often showcasing its most prominent structures such as skyscrapers, monuments, and bridges. The arrangement and height of buildings within the skyline create a unique visual profile that distinguishes one city from another, making it a symbol of its cultural and economic significance. At night, the city skyline takes on a mesmerizing quality as the lights from buildings, streets, and vehicles illuminate the darkness, creating a breathtaking panorama. This illumination not only serves functional purposes such as providing visibility and safety but also adds an aesthetic dimension to the cityscape, turning it into a dazzling display of human ingenuity and creativity. The city skyline, with its twinkling lights and towering structures, often serves as a symbol of urban vitality, innovation, and the bustling energy of modern life. #snsct #snsdesginthinking #snsdesginthinkers #snsinsitution

Austin is eyeing some exciting changes to Congress Avenue! The Congress Avenue Urban Design Initiative aims to create a more pedestrian-friendly street and solidify the area as Austin’s “Main Street.” They are proposing that the blocks between 7th and 11th streets be transformed into public plazas, and vehicular traffic would end north of 7th Street. This space would be transformed into a community hub with art installations, live music performances, and pop-up exhibits. Other aspects of the plan include painting the asphalt with murals, replacing angles parking zones with wooden decks, and improving tree health! The Undulating District designed as one of Tokyo's Greenest Urban Areas From the video, Heatherwick Studio's project in Tokyo appears to be a fascinating initiative that integrates nature and urban design in a novel way. Here's a breakdown of the key points for architects and landscape architects: "Architect's perspective" ●Innovative use of pergolas: The project's core concept of transforming pergolas into buildings with a deformable grid system is a unique architectural approach. This method offers exciting possibilities for creating multifunctional spaces that seamlessly blend with the natural environment. ●Blurring the lines: The design's ability to blur the boundaries between built structures and nature presents a fresh perspective on urban development. This can lead to more organic and user-friendly spaces within dense cityscapes. ●Importance of community engagement: The video highlights the importance of community involvement throughout the 27-year planning process. This collaborative approach ensures the project caters to the needs of the residents and fosters a sense of ownership within the community. "Landscape architect's perspective" ●Prioritizing nature in urban design: The project's focus on integrating greenery into the heart of the development aligns with current trends in landscape architecture. Creating a network of green spaces within the built environment enhances the overall well-being of residents. ●Multi-functionality of green spaces: The pergolas serve a dual purpose, providing both structural support for buildings and a framework for incorporating plant life. This innovative concept can inspire new methods for maximizing the functionality of green spaces in urban areas. ●Importance of social spaces: The emphasis on creating gathering spaces and pedestrian connections throughout the district aligns with landscape architecture principles. Well-designed social areas encourage interaction and community building within the development. Overall, Heatherwick Studio's project presents a commendable effort in merging architecture and nature within a densely populated city. The project offers valuable insights for both architects and landscape architects interested in creating more sustainable and community-oriented urban developments. I love shifting from the scale of city planning to designing the city's smallest integrated particle: the microhome... We were commissioned to design and remodel a 12 sqm space into the tiniest, fully equipped microhome we've worked on so far! Here is my key-steps guide which I hope will prove to be adequate for such a small space: * Reinterpret all architectural principles pushing them to their limits. * Combine compatible functions within the same corner of the available space. * Think out-of-the-box while being into the box. * Add dimensions if three are not enough. * Celebrate a microhome that is cozy, functional and sexy.

Ah, vertical platform lifts – the unsung heroes of the architecture world. Who wouldn't want a steel, motorized contraption elegantly rising through their home, practically shouting, “Yes, I am both practical and slightly terrifying?” - First off, let's address the obvious: Are they a modern marvel or just going up against staircases in an existential duel? Some say they’re a gift for accessibility, others say they're a reminder of our indestructible middle-aged knees. - Accessibility is a right, not a privilege, and these lifts? They're the underrated champions of inclusion. A smooth glide to the next floor, because everyone deserves to feel on top of the world – or at least the second floor. - Here's a hot take: in a world where the elevator music is always just a bit too chipper, vertical lifts give you uninterrupted silence to muse on life’s mysteries. Lofty thoughts only, please. - Let’s not forget aesthetics. Who wouldn’t be seduced by a sleek, chrome beast occupying your living room, offering vertical journeys and philosophical ruminations to match? https://lnkd.in/emdgfXDV #VerticalLifts #Accessibility #Innovation #ArchitecturalMarvels #DeepThoughts
