Suicide impacts every corner of the globe. Every community is filled with those who know the grief of loss and the pain that suicide brings. Despite this widespread hurt, we often find ourselves keeping these stories, and our thoughts and feelings, inside. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗔𝗺 𝗜 𝗥𝗶𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗙𝗼𝗿? Starting in Kununurra on August 30th, I will ride over 3249 km in 28 days, arriving in Perth on September 27th. This journey acknowledges the devastating impact of suicide on our communities and supports A Stitch in Time's mission to eliminate it. It's an ambitious mission, but without aiming high, we won't achieve the change we seek. We've set a fundraising target of $100,000, which will significantly assist our efforts at A Stitch in Time. Any support and generosity are greatly appreciated. 3249 people died by suicide in 2022 with 8.6 Australian's by suicide every day - more than double the national road toll for the same year. Suicide is the leading cause of death for people aged 15-44 years and more than 65,000 Australian's make a suicide attempt every year. 135 people are impacted by the loss of one person as a result of suicide. This equates to a staggering 435,366 people in 2022 that were impacted by this tragic outcome. Our aim is to fundamentally shift the focus from crisis to prevention. Awareness alone is not enough. We create environments that empower people to look after their mental health and emotional wellbeing. We achieve this by engaging and education people to develop the tools to look after their mental health, stay healthy and prevent illness, long before reaching crisis. A Stitch exists to end suicide. Every pedal stroke brings us closer to expanding our outreach, developing vital programs, and providing crucial resources to promote mental well being across Western Australia. Together, we can make a profound impact, save lives, and build a brighter future for countless individuals. LAST ORDERS.......AT THE FINISHING LINE So, I ran (by which I mean "jogged and hobbled") the Morley 10k on Sunday 6th October, in support of PAPYRUS. And now I ache in places where I didn't even know I had places !! You may be aware that I'm trying to raise funds for an important charity which tries to prevent young suicide. And when suicide is the biggest killer of under 35s, you know how important their work is. Just in case you missed my earlier posts, in recognition of World Suicide Prevention Day 2024 (  #WSPD24 ), once again, I am hoping to raise funds for #PAPYRUS a charity that helps young people with suicidal thoughts. World Suicide Prevention Day is an opportunity for people and organisations across the world to make a commitment to preventing suicide. It reminds us that we all have a role to play in preventing suicide, and that our actions, however big or small, can provide hope to those who are struggling. This year’s theme of ‘changing the narrative on suicide’ recognises that we need to transform the way we understand suicide, and the way we speak about it. We need to approach conversations around suicide with openness, empathy, and a supportive attitude. We need to equip communities to support one another, and we need to advocate for suicide prevention to be on the agenda. We need to tell a different story about suicide: it isn’t a personal crisis for someone to solve all on their own. We should all be in this together to try to save young lives. On average, 1 man dies by suicide every minute of every day. That’s why I’m supporting MOvember to raise awareness and funds for men's mental health and suicide prevention. Movember is about more than fundraising, it’s about making real change and getting dudes comfortable talking. They work to support men and boys by focusing on early help and community support. I’m proud to be part of this movement, and I really believe we can make a difference. September is Suicide Awareness Month, and it gives me great pride to say that I will be captain for the 8th straight year of "Grace's Gang of RBVH" as we walk in the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention's Out of the Darkness Walk. What started as a "gang" of 2 in 2017, just my then 8-year-old daughter Grace and I, when we lost her Dad to suicide, grew the following year when my incomparable co-workers asked to come with us and walk. Every year since, the gang has grown, and we have raised nearly $100,000 for the cause. More than the money raised, I feel we have created a more open dialogue throughout the hospital. We ask each other how we are. We listen. Sometimes we offer only a smile, because sometimes, that's all a person needs. We talk more about how it's ok to not be ok, we embrace our differences, rather than trying to hide them. Raising money through the walk is so important, but the raising of awareness for mental health and well being is equally so. I am extremely proud of this team. And we are always welcoming new team members--I would say gang members, but ya know that sounds kinda creepy. Join our team, walk side by side with some of the best people I have the honor of knowing. Bring your dogs. Your kids. Its not a sad day. Quite the opposite. Its a day of hope. A day of new beginnings. A day of remembering, but with love, not sadness. And if a tear falls, that's ok too, because that's life--you take the good with the bad, but you keep going.
