Failures could be because of many reasons BUT they ALWAYS make you better!
Let’s circle back to October 2004. I had just begun my career at a KPO called Aranca, specializing in equity research at that time.
Our boss then, decided to hold a weekly report writing competition to keep the employee morale high.
The winner would get a small cash prize, in addition to the consistent winners being promoted to supervisory roles.
I used to participate with a lot of sincerity, as I considered myself to be a better writer than my peers. However, the watchful eyes of my supervisors would find some or the other issue every week in my research reports.
All sorts of reasons were given week after week- be it flow of investment thesis, ideation, logic, expression, punctuations or numerical accuracy- all very important in a report.
After a good 6 months, I got increasingly frustrated & decided to confront my supervisors.
The first one said that he doesn’t like my style of writing & has been consistently been giving me feedback, which I have been ignoring. Hence my reports aren’t the best.
The second one- who was also the editor, told me that I am not winning, because he feels that I can do far better. He said that I have shown improvement but its still not worthy of being a winner.
He asked me to read a lot to be able to write better. This went on for a few more months- I kept getting frustrated and never won any week. It almost became a joke in the office, till I finally resigned one day to join Deutsche Bank.
However, this whole episode got me into the habit of reading & writing. I wrote many answers on Quora during the last decade, but none of them went viral.
Just as I was looking to find some place where I could write to my heart’s content, came the covid lockdown, & I began spending more time on LinkedIn.
I again began writing, & this time, LinkedIn rewarded me. I began getting a lot of good feedback & some really good interaction from my connections.
Looking back, if I didn’t have to endure what I did at Aranca, I probably wouldn’t be having good times on LinkedIn almost 2 decades later!
Like I said, failures could be because of many reasons, but they always make you better!
