Swimming Pools and Granite Countertops: How College Dorms Got So Expensive Arizona State University students will pay more than $9,600 this year to live in a shared bedroom at Manzanita Hall, a 15-story dorm on the edge of campus with an exterior that looks like a honeycomb. About a decade ago, a private developer took over Manzanita and gave it a $50 million refresh, including new lounges, an upgraded lobby and community kitchens. Then the cost of living there shot up. Now, after multiple increases, ASU students pay about 80% more than what Sun Devils paid to live in the building about 20 years ago, adjusted for inflation. Housing is one of the biggest drivers of rising college prices in the U.S., fueling the $1.6 trillion federal student loan crisis, a Wall Street Journal investigation found. Preservation news you can use coming in from beloved Belle Isle in the City of Detroit and Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Preservation friends, take a minute to process: The fight to save the historic Belle Isle Boat House and the deadline that looms❗️ The details are as follows: ❗️ The Belle Isle Boat House is home to the Detroit Boat Club, a club that goes back all the way to 1839. ❗️The Belle Isle Boat House is home to one of the oldest rowing clubs in the world, training Olympians as well as high schoolers. ❗️Time is ticking as it may soon be demolished. ❗️The boat house is overseen and maintained by the nonprofit Friends of Detroit Rowing under a lease agreement. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources handles the park's overall management, and the DNR says there's just no funds to upkeep the building anymore.  ❗️The state Legislature approved $2 million of the funds to specifically address the Belle Isle Boat House. ❗️The DNR was officially accepting proposals for renovation efforts from private and public entities until the spring but have extended that to the end of JULY.
