Campus safety initiatives shouldn’t fall solely on your campus safety department. Your students should be just as involved, especially since they are more privy to the campus social scene than your security officers. Getting students to take an active role in maintaining a safe, secure environment can make a significant and direct impact on campus safety. How do you get your students involved—and keep them involved—for a safer campus community? #campussafety #studentsafety #safetyinitiatives

Although we have completed our four part series covering the elements of an effective school safety strategy, it is clear that the ability to 'secure-in-place' within the classroom, conceal the room's occupants and lock the classroom door is extremely effective and foundational to every school safety strategy, In this next blog post, we have compiled what are generally agreed to the key requirement to be able to achieve classroom door locking with maximum efficiency and minimal risk. We highly recommend everyone involved in school safety read this critically important post: https://hubs.la/Q02sBSyw0 Let's keep working together to ensure the safety and security of our schools. #schoolsafety #education #security #communityengagement

As we have been discussing, we want to help school districts focus on the multi-layered approach to school safety which include: 1. Physical Security, 2. Policy and processes, and 3. Engagement. Policy and process addresses the need for everyone to understand their role in an emergency situation and emergency and what they are to do if something unexpectedly occurs. Processes can be within a school campus and or across a whole school district. All people involved need to be drilled and the processes audited to ensure that should a situation occurs, the best possible outcome can be achieved Schools and school districts need to develop a culture of school safety through ongoing means of motivating and rewarding as well as auditing as we outline in the post. Let’s continue to never grow weary of attention to school safety and let’s keep our kids, teachers and staff safe. ATTENTION SCHOOL LEADERS Have you completed the important first step and had an independent safety assessment performed? The Michigan Dept of Education is providing grant funding for that very purpose. With summer approaching, now is a great time to engage School Safety and Compliance to perform a Threat, Vulnerability and Risk Assessment (TVRA). Upon completion of your TVRA, school leaders are provided a detailed report listing findings and recommendations that can be used to prioritize improvements to your facility and staff training. The Michigan Department of Education 31aa grants for 2024-2025 provides significant new per pupil funding for districts to use for school safety initiatives and mental health resources. Applicants can get their estimated award by multiplying their current pupil count by $220. Approved Uses of Funds Includes: • Facility safety and security assessments • Updated emergency operations procedures • Training for school staff on threat assessment • Training for school staff and students on threat response • Safety infrastructure, including, but not limited to, o Cameras, Door secondary locks, Hardened vestibules, Security glass/glazing, Door and window labeling, etc. • School resource officers • Any other school safety service or product necessary to improve or maintain security in buildings ________________________________________________________________________________ Many districts have taken advantage of state funding to update emergency and safety procedures, get independent facility safety assessments, install new safety infrastructure and equipment, and more. SS&C is a Michigan company that partners with its educational community clients – both public and private – to achieve their safety and security goals. We assist our School District clients with everything from the performance of independent safety audits of facilities and procedures, preparation of EOPs, and building-level staff training. See our website to see (1) a list of SS&C professional services for our educational clients, (2) a description of our School Facility Risk-Assessments, and (3) what experience shows are the Top 3 School Security Mistakes. Once upon a time, school safety was a simple matter. The biggest concerns were a scraped knee on the playground or a lost lunchbox. Fast forward to today, and the narrative has drastically changed. In an era where ensuring the safety of students, staff, and faculty is paramount, school administrators face a complex challenge - how to protect their schools in an increasingly unpredictable world. The crucial first step in any school safety plan is controlling and monitoring access to school premises with a Visitor Management System. Such a system is not just a tool; it's a fundamental step towards enhancing the security of your school environment. If your current school safety plan does not include streamlined visitor check-ins, thorough background checks for visitors and volunteers, and detailed tracking of student and visitor activities, now is the time to consider integrating these critical elements.

In the context of school safety, we want to help school districts focus on the multi-layered approach to school safety which include: 1. Physical Security, 2. Policy and processes, and 3. Engagement. In this post (https://hubs.la/Q02RSVsj0), we discuss physical security. Physical security requires a review and hardening of specific areas of your campus including the overall property, the campus parking lot(s), the building(s) themselves and within the building interior, including the classroom. This relates to several types of security including (and most importantly), the locking of facility and room doors, the surveillance of the property and public areas and the methods of controlling access and flows within the buildings. In reviewing physical security, it’s important to address multiple layers of physical security as we outline in https://hubs.la/Q02RSVsj0. Let’s continue to never grow weary of attention to school safety and let’s keep our kids, teachers and staff safe. #schoolsafety #schoolsecurity #townsteel #doorsecurity #doorhardware
