📝 What are the keys to sustaining solutions co-designed by school districts and communities? For starters:
• Garner buy-in at multiple levels of the district system and community.
• Iterate on implementation by folding in practical and logistical improvements.
• Embed new solutions into existing operations and procedures.
• Demonstrate benefits of the solutions from the perspectives of direct participants.
Through the perspectives of school district and community members, our new paper explores what factors helped teams implement their co-designed solutions and the lasting mindset shifts that emerged as a result of their engagement in the #InclusiveInnovation process.

Woke up to a compelling read by Steven Brint in the Chronicle of Higher Ed. It’s a stark reminder: “Education must be a right, not a privilege for the few.” This article is a call to action for all of us in the education sector. We stand at a crossroads, and it’s time to advocate for a system where access to knowledge isn’t gated by wealth. Let’s engage, innovate, and fight for an inclusive future. #EducationForAll#InclusiveEducation

Thank you Robert Avossa, Ed.D. and Dr. Brent Jones for writing and sharing this thought leadership piece. I've seen the success of a classroom, grade level, and school building when the non-academic barriers to learning have been effectively addressed through supporting educators and providing mental health services to students. A Principal once said to me, "I'll reduce the number of Reading Specialists on my campus to have more mental health services because addressing the underlying cause of a students deficit in reading, undiagnosed/untreated mental health challenges, did more for my campus reading scores than any intervention I've implemented."
These strategies (shared from the article) are spot on! "So, what can we do? First, light- to medium-scale self-care and wellness programs for educators should be table stakes. Next, address the non-academic barriers to learning by empowering and equipping school teams with practical, evidence-based tools to anticipate and defuse behaviors that are disruptive to learning, and to identify signs of mental health challenges. Not just once. Embed these strategies in the new-teacher training curriculum, make it part of annual training followed by coaching, and bring in third-party experts in these fields to avoid overstaffing and overtaxing your existing trainers."
Take a few minutes to read and share an article I coauthored with the Superintendent of Seattle Public Schools about removing non-academic barriers to accelerate learning - Dr. Brent Jones https://lnkd.in/ekmdVUn6
A fascinating article. Let's hope we see more higher level decisions made in this vein. A lot seems to be happening at grass roots level, individual teachers and departments, but this is an example of what really needs to happen. #cognitivescience#cogsci#scienceoflearning#effectiveteaching#studentsuccess
Can the lessons schools learned in the Covid-19 recovery period contribute to more lasting, transformative shifts in high school? The answer: Yep!
For evidence of this, some friends at CRPE produced a powerful report that details how a bunch of high schools in New England prepare young people not just for college or work, but to live a “good life” on their own terms—to be fulfilled, happy adults with stable, family-sustaining incomes, strong communities, and choices about which opportunities to pursue. The report contains innumerable insights and reform strategies that systems leaders, building administrators, and classroom educators can and should use to invigorate their approaches.
