What factors contribute to youth suicide? There are a number of theories, but they were all initially developed and tested among adults. Few studies have focused specifically on adolescents. This study from Translational Psychiatry addresses these gaps in knowledge and aims to provide recommendations for future adolescent suicide research. 🗞️ See the study here: https://lnkd.in/g7BT4_Br #CAMScare #EvidenceBasedCare #YouthSuicidePrevention

🧠 The Value Equation in Psychiatry 🧠 For the past 35 years, we’ve seen a troubling trend in psychiatry that demands our attention: biologic reductionism. This approach has contributed to the overdiagnosis of emotional health conditions and the overprescribing of medications that often provide little benefit, while frequently causing more harm than good. This is the sentiment of Dr. Wesley Sowers, in his article, "The Value Equation in Psychiatry." Your Takeaways: 🧪 Biologic reductionism in psychiatry has led to overdiagnosis of emotional health conditions and overprescribing of medications with limited benefits. 💰 The U.S. healthcare system is fragmented, often prioritizing profit over patient outcomes, contributing to poor mental health care. 🧠 Preventive care is underutilized, with many mental health conditions going undetected until they become acute or chronic. 😎 Non-pharmacologic therapies like family and group interventions are underemphasized in psychiatric training, reducing overall care quality. 👎 High administrative costs and overtreatment are significant drivers of inefficiency in mental health care, hindering efforts to deliver high-value services. 🎯 Challenge this Paradigm 🎯 As healthcare professionals, we must challenge this paradigm. The over-reliance on medication undermines the holistic care many patients need, detracting from non-pharmacologic therapies such as family and group interventions, which have proven effective. It's time to re-evaluate how we define value in psychiatric care. Instead of prioritizing short-term fixes, let’s advocate for strategies that focus on comprehensive, sustainable outcomes for our patients. 📢 Call to action: If you're passionate about improving mental health services, join the conversation. Let’s push for better practices that serve the whole patient, not just the symptom. #MentalHealth #HealthcareReform #ValueBasedCare #Psychiatry

Social psychiatry can be defined as a branch of psychiatry that focuses on understanding and addressing the influence of social, cultural, and environmental factors on mental health and mental illness. It examines how social structures, relationships, and societal norms contribute to the onset, course, and treatment of psychiatric disorders. Social psychiatry emphasizes the importance of considering social determinants of mental health, promoting community-based interventions, cultural competence, social support networks, prevention strategies, interdisciplinary collaboration, and social justice in mental health care. Check out this article in Psychiatric Times. Is Psychiatry Becoming Extinct? A key component of Psychiatry Redefined 's clear differentiation of Functional Integrative Medicine training for Mental Health is the consideration of all the treatment recommendations. Just as importantly, we haven’t thrown away our prescription pads either. Every individual is unique; our role at PR is to train clinicians utilizing evidence-based and scientific research to be able to identify the root cause of mental health disorders and create a personalized treatment plan that meets individual needs. Moving beyond the ‘one size fits all’ treatment protocols, we move from symptom management to true recovery. ##MentalHealth #FunctionalMedicine #PersonalizedCare #TrueRecovery #functionalpsychiatry #functionalmedicineforpsychiatry #nutritionalpsychiatry #psychiatryredefined https://lnkd.in/efGH2Vwx

Be bear aware! Read on why, and why elderly psychiatry deserves our attention... In 'big' media, we are increasingly reading about general elderly care; we stand on the brink of an aging population and there is already a significant shortage of care. The pressing issue makes elderly care hot. Increasing attention for general elderly care is accompanied by new, inspiring initiatives in the Netherlands, such as BeterOud and Reable Nederland. Although I am wondering to what extent these initiatives cater to elderly psychiatric patients: how can we provide the best care for these patients, focusing on contemporary ideas of autonomy and recovery? How do we organize continuity and safety of care for those with psychiatric problems? Those more vulnerable, when many caregivers get involved while there is tiny to zero support network. In the national Dutch mental health guideline 'Elderly with psychological disorders', two important pillars of care are mentioned: matched care: how to quickly get the patient to the most suitable caregiver, and collaborative care: thorough collaboration between caregivers from different sectors.* Both are familiar challenges in psychiatric care yet. Ensuring them for elderly patients is proven to be even more complex due to several factors, including the complex interplay between psyche and somatics, making the elderly patient vulnerable. Fog and delya occur during diagnostics. On top, due to the change in life stage they experiences losses and role changing occurs. To me this justifies a separate specialized framework for care in elderly psychiatry. It surprises me that this target group receives little attention in that same media. And 'madly' enough, there has been little research to date on the organization of elderly care specifically within psychiatry. We are aware of the bears, but the most tricky ones out there (watch out for the white-tailed deer in the US!) are not mentioned. I am very curious to hear what the Danes can tell and teach us about the organisation of care in elderly psychiatric patients... To be continued! * https://lnkd.in/gCnvXa3i

I’m pleased to share an article I wrote about ERPs in precision psychiatry and their potential to help solve our mental health care crisis was posted on @MedCityNews. The article offers an overview of the work we have been doing around gathering and using interpretable brain measures to help accelerate mental health care journeys so patients can experience positive outcomes sooner. The time is right for psychiatry to start measuring brain function with more accessible and reliable measures. I’d love to hear your thoughts after reading it.
