For all the community interpreters, refugee resettlers, and Salvadoreños out there, Terp 🦕 is stoked to bring you a dialogue that is a mix of social services and refugee services: https://lnkd.in/gWYTutXw This one follows a refugee family who has resettled in California from El Salvador; they have some surprising (and some not-so-surprising) complaints about the apartment block they're living in, so it should make for some interpreting that'll keep you on your toes. This brings the total dialogue count on Terp up to 13 🙌! And keeping the competition for coveted Terp points going, 50 points to anyone who figures out the proper-noun related Salvadorean Easter Egg in this dialogue! Don't hesitate to reach out (devin@terp.app) if you'd like to demo group access to Terp (https://terp.app) for a class or training program. Also, remember that anyone can get two separate, 1-week free trials to the platform 🤠 The dialogue was authored by Romina Espinosa, co-authored by Ana Soler, BSW, MPH, and edited by Allison deFreese, Devin Gilbert, and Yohana Imperio. Big shout out to the National Association of Educational Translators and Interpreters of Spoken Languages since Romina, Ana, and Allison are heavily involved in that organization and partnered with Utah Valley University in order to create many other dialogues like this one to support training opportunities for community interpreters. Thank you to the Utah Valley University College of Humanities and Social Sciences for funding the content creation. Although this dialogue deals with social services, it would still be great practice for interpreters studying for their Certified Healthcare Interpreter credential through Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI) or for those just starting with a 40-hr interpreting course (for example those offered through Cross-Cultural Communications (shout out to John A.) or through The Cross Cultural Health Care Program (CCHCP) (Bridging the Gap). #terp #interpreting #interpreters #terp #refugees #migrants #communityinterpreting #socialservices #interpretertraining #dialogueinterpreting #spanish #english #elsalvador

With the rapid growth in Immigration within the United States, it becomes more important for communities to provide proper language solutions to their citizens. #bridingthegap #languagesolutions #bilinguals #immigrationlaw #interpretersinlaw #interpreters #languageservices
“The people who need the services most, including immigrants, are generally unaware that they’re available or how to access them, some community groups say. Members of the public must request interpretation in advance but even then, the city might fail to provide it because of resource shortages. The result is a persistent communication gap between the people who make laws and many whom they affect.” https://lnkd.in/g6gN_EQS

Super interesting new paper on the effects of local policies on refugee integration! 👇 A survey of 9000➕ refugees in Germany from 2012–2018 showed that: 🗺 Local variation in integration across employment, education, language, housing, etc. is limited to about 5% within 4–8 years after immigration. 👨👩👦 Changes in policy indicators (of about 10% during the time period studied) do not appear to directly translate into better integration of refugees
Our new paper is out in International Migration Review 🥰 https://lnkd.in/ecJc4vb8

From Fear to Hate: Legal-Linguistic Perspectives on Migration (Volume 6 in the series Foundations in Language and Law) Despite the diverse linguistic data, approaches, and methodologies employed, each paper offers a comprehensive understanding of hate speech – defined as “speech acts that can potentially express hatred and generate hate in larger sections of the population” (p. 11). This exploration is contextualized within the broader global phenomenon of migration, examining it through three overarching perspectives: language, discourse, and law (p. 18). France's decision to alter its immigration policy on the island of Mayotte, requiring at least one parent to be French for a child to obtain a passport, has stirred controversy. The move is driven by concerns of a social crisis attributed to immigrants from nearby Comoros seeking refuge from poverty. While this change is specific to Mayotte, it has ignited debates, with far-right politicians in France advocating for similar policy reversals nationwide. This shift raises questions about the broader application of the "droit du sol" immigration policy across French territories. A poll indicates that 65% of respondents believe this policy should be revoked on all French territory. Meanwhile, the West African region faces complexities within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). This development raises uncertainties about the region's security and the enduring influence of "Francafrique," signifying French soft and hard power over former African colonies. The shift might potentially lead to more coups with anti-imperialist undertones, challenging the historic dominance of French influence in the region.

Professor of International Relations and Political Science at Boston University Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies
Please check out this working paper that I wrote with Hal S. Scott and Aki Nakai that surveys academic and policy literatures on how territorial conflicts end and what makes for sustainable post-conflict settlements. It was sponsored by the Program on International Financial Systems. https://lnkd.in/eHTnpK5J In reading analyses of the Ukraine war, we were struck by the fact that these analyses, even though often excellent and well-informed on their own terms, did not seem to be speaking to a common set of assumptions. To our surprise, we realized that one reason is that there was no single source that pulled together the insights of writers across all the relevant literatures from international relations, security studies, strategic studies, comparative politics, history, ethnic politics, and education policy. This report is neither a “how-to” guide nor an advocacy piece. Rather, it is a guide to various ideas and pitfalls that have been addressed in academic and policy writing about how wars end and how to prevent conflict from recurring. Across a large range of conflicts and analyses, there are some issues that arise pretty consistently in one form or another; moreover, there is a limited repertoire of how to address those points. While we don't directly analyze the current conflict, we are convinced that theory and history offer a guide as to where to look for both pitfalls and solutions.

I combine insights from law, sociology, political science, social psychology, theology, philosophy, and more, testing these against EU asylum policy, to provide a more integral understanding of solidarity in the EU that can be employed across disciplines. I aim to reduce uncertainty around the application of the concept and inform policymakers, jurisdiction as well as the academic debate.
Very proud to announce my open access publication in Theory and Society where I propose an interdisciplinary analytical framework for #Solidarity in the #EU that is based on a conceptual history approach, buttressed with legal analysis and an examination of European integration. https://lnkd.in/gXihz8fR
