The stakes could not be higher. The climate crisis is an existential threat, and every year of inaction brings us closer to irreversible tipping points. Europe must rise to the occasion, not just for its own citizens but for the billions of people around the world whose futures depend on collective action. The new Trump era may mark a new chapter in what is a difficult period for international climate diplomacy, but it is not the end of the story. By responding with unity, ambition, and leadership, Europe can turn this moment of crisis into a catalyst for climate action. The Paris Agreement—the planet—and humanity, depend on it.

📢 The two pillars of a political #compromise known as the Belgian roadmap have broken the stalemate over the Energy Charter Treaty within the #EU, giving the Council the final go-ahead for the #EuropeanUnion and Euratom to leave the #ECT and simultaneously left the door wide open for the remaining member states to spruce the treaty up and make room for #energytransition goals and #netzero aspirations. There is still a potential catch – the EU’s escape route from the treaty will need mechanisms to override and render the #sunsetclause ineffective before crossing the threshold to ensure the ECT’s 20-year protection of existing #energy #investments will not hinder its climate action. The #interse #agreement the member states have reached is expected to tackle the issue. #decarbonization #fossilfuels #oil #gas #oilgas #offshoreenergy #oilandgasnews #energysecurity #climate #climateaction #climatechange #parisagreement #EuropeanGreenDeal #greenenergy #renewables #sustainability #renewableenergy #energychartertreaty European Union The Energy Charter Friends of the Earth Europe Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2024

New from the Center on Global Energy Policy, my colleagues and I have put together some analysis and recommendations around energy and climate decision points for the new administration. My piece focuses on a decision point on US-GCC relations and how to partner in development for clean energy in emerging market economies--in short, how the Gulf states are emerging as major infrastructure and development architects and financiers, designing models of what "development" looks like in the 21st century. How should America partner with or encourage this shift in geopolitics?

On 30 May 2024, the Council of the EU adopted a decision for the coordinated withdrawal from the Energy Charter Treaty, which has increasingly been seen as a barrier to climate action. 🔗 To learn more, read our blog post below. #EnergyCharterTreaty #ClimateAction #EU

An excellent overview of the path ahead for the EU-UK cooperation on energy and climate. The current energy provisions of the TCA are set expire by the end of June 2026 (and remain unfinished on matters such as market coupling) and a more long-term view is needed to maintain and improve efficient energy flows across the Channel, North Sea, and to and from Ireland. Beyond trading, investment, and climate action, the cooperation needs to extend to the physical and digital security of the system as well. Political will is paramount.

2mothanks a lot for sharing. These paragraphs seem to me the key to our future: 'Momentum for action at this year’s annual climate talks, COP30, is already building and other nations, including host country Brazil, are stepping up to the plate. China has become one of the biggest renewable energy developers in the world. The UK too is eyeing the title of global climate leader. In the absence of the US’s contribution, Trinder adds, it becomes ever more important for other global leaders to scale up their actions - and that includes the EU'
