During the month of June, we celebrate National Indigenous History Month, recognizing and celebrating the unique heritage, diverse cultures, and significant contributions of Indigenous peoples. While many Indigenous groups share some commonalities, they each have their own distinct heritage, language, cultural practices, and spiritual beliefs. Our Diversity & Inclusion team is dedicated to empowering all employees through education, awareness, and cultural understanding. Part of that cultural understanding is learning about the cultural practices of Indigenous peoples and their significance. We were delighted to host Katie Longboat, originally from Six Nations of the Grand River, at our Toronto Headquarters to lead a beading workshop. Beading is a cultural art form deeply valued by Indigenous communities. This tradition, passed down through generations, serves as a means of preserving and conveying cultural knowledge, while also promoting wellness and fostering community. The 100th anniversary of the Indian Citizenship Act of 1924 was celebrated on June 2, 2024. The act granted full citizenship to all Indigenous people born in the United States. Here are some things to know about the Indian Citizenship Act: Native Americans have been part of the history of the United States for thousands of years. In the late 19th century, the US government built detention camps on Native American homelands and established a separate legal system for them. The act did not include voting rights, which were not settled for another 40 years. Indigenous people continue to fight for voting rights, with some suing the state for voting barriers. There is work to be done still. Some legal experts believe that the act was a retroactive correction for the mistake of allowing tribal members to serve in World War I as if they were citizens. Many Native Americans hold dual citizenship in a federally recognized tribe and the United States.

An important survey...
Writer, poet, speaker; equity, diversity & inclusion consultant. Co-director of The Inclusion Agency.
There's still time to have a say, until the end of the month: Is your cultural heritage misrepresented by British museums? Are you represented in them at all? Do you want to be a part of how the cultural heritage of racially minoritised people is presented and communicated, with respect and celebration? Then this is your time to have a say! The UnMuseum Project, funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, is an exploration into what a cultural heritage space would look like if it was built by and for Black and Racially Minoritised communities in the South West of England. With you, we want to change the landscape of cultural heritage in our region, but to do so we need your voices! This survey is a chance for you to shape how your people's histories and cultures are represented in a dedicated Centre for Black and Brown Culture - a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity! Take a few minutes from your day to help change the future of the South West! https://lnkd.in/eChWSFQJ

In the journey of self-discovery and understanding, our heritage plays a pivotal role, intricately weaving the fabric of our identities with threads of tradition, language, and history. It's a celebration of the myriad ways in which our ancestries influence our lives, often in more ways than we realize, from our values and beliefs to the subtleties of our daily practices. I invite my professional network to reflect on and share their own heritage stories. How do your cultural roots influence your professional identity and values? How do you bring your unique background into your workplace, fostering diversity and inclusivity? Let's use this opportunity to share, learn from one another, and celebrate the diversity that strengthens and enriches our professional communities. #Heritage #CulturalPride #DiversityAndInclusion Join the conversation by sharing your heritage stories and insights. Indigenous History Month. It's essential to reflect on how we connect with each other. The idea of engagement can feel overwhelming, leading to overthinking and hesitation. However, a meaningful way to start is learning about Indigenous Peoples is to "think local." Focusing on local Indigenous communities allows us to build authentic relationships, connect on a deeper level, and recognize local changemakers walking significant journeys. Attend local events, support Indigenous-owned businesses, volunteer for local initiatives, and educate yourself about the history and culture of Indigenous peoples in your area. These practical steps help foster genuine connections and demonstrate our commitment to the community's well-being. Indigenous History Month is a time to honor the rich heritage, diverse cultures, and significant contributions of Indigenous peoples. By thinking local, we ground our efforts in respect and authenticity, making our actions more impactful.
