I learn so much from Auden Schendler and the Aspen Skiing Company. They push the envelope on all things corporate sustainability, so their recent sustainability report is going to get a lot of love from me on LinkedIn the next few days. Look at their strategy. It starts with Wielding Power, or using their position to push legislators, customers, and vendors to make real change on sustainability. Not just measure emissions, which they call a "baseline credibility as a climate actor." But write letters to senators, push for board changes at vendors, and leave industry groups that don't stand up to their values. Everyone working on anything corporate-ESG needs to read Aspen Skiing Company's sustainability report. You might not agree with all of the approach. Undertaking the remarkable challenge of completing 7 marathons across 7 continents in just 7 days 🏃♂️🌍 aims to spotlight the urgent need for environmental action. But does the air travel involved contradict my eco-conscious goals? 🤔 Air travel undeniably has a significant carbon footprint. To counteract this, I am dedicated to neutralizing the emissions from my journey by supporting projects focused on reforestation and environmental protection. In 2025, I will embrace this formidable dual challenge with a primary goal: to elevate awareness about the pressing environmental crisis. This journey is more than a test of endurance; it represents a pledge to eco-sustainability. Yet, the question arises: Can one align globe-trotting adventures with environmental stewardship? ✅ Motivate all to stretch their boundaries without forsaking their principles. ✅ Enhance recognition of the environmental impact of athletic travel, while exploring efficient strategies to achieve sports ambitions with minimal ecological footprint. ✅ Generate funding for specific eco-friendly projects in every continent visited. Predictores is thrilled to have contributed to a groundbreaking project featured in Prof. Dr. Uwe Seebacher's latest blog post: "How to Save 1,4 bio Tonnes CO2 Emissions in Winter Ski Tourism Until 2030". 🚀 Our team provided crucial information and predictions for the innovative Dune Glide Oasis project, a pioneering approach in eco-tourism. This project introduces sand skiing as a sustainable alternative to winter sports, addressing the challenges posed by climate change. The concept not only offers huge opportunities for so far underused desert regions but also for the entire direct and indirect ski sport industry needing to develop new sand skis, boards, apparels, lift infrastructures and much more. Cyclists! What's in your region's plans for you? Where I live, Manawatū, there is some money for cycling. But much of it is devoted to expensive projects (like $37 million for a 200 metre clip-on for recreational riders) that will not achieve the council's goals of transport choice, safety, mode shift, and emissions reduction. The threat of E.coli is at large in the River Seine! The Paris Olympic Triathlon could be cancelled due to poor-quality water levels. And depending on the weather… 🌧️ If heavy rain falls, it could raise levels of E. coli in the water - making it unsafe for swimmers. Feels like Deja Vu… Last year at the World Triathlon Championship Series in Sunderland. 🏊 57 people suffered from sickness and diarrhoea after swimming events. Water quality tests revealed elevated levels of E coli, which raised concerns about sewage discharges. Can swimmers trust the cleanliness of seas, rivers and lakes these days? Legal actions were taken against the government regarding sewage discharges. But, there are still questions about how water quality is managed and what implications this might have for future events. Future events like… The Shropshire Triathlon - that I’m taking part in this year 😂 → But let’s be honest we can’t ignore the effects of water pollution… Water pollution is a major concern with serious implications for the environment, wildlife, and human health. 🦠 These pollutants can disrupt aquatic ecosystems, harm marine life, and affect the quality of water we depend on for drinking, farming, and recreation. Just this past weekend I went on a cycling trip to North Devon to cycle along parts of the South West Coast Path. I've always found cycling is a great mental toughness trainer and gives very important life lessons for me on how to deal with hard situations. Here are the lessons I learned over this trip: -Be lean and efficient: Nothing encourages you to be more lean than being on a steep Devon road realising you probably didn't need the extra 2kg worth of weight from your mokapot, grinder, and extra sets of pants you didn't use. In projects and working, the impacts of being inefficient may not be as obvious but can cost a lot in time and money down the road. -The importance of a positive and can-do attitude: On the way to the Valley of Rocks in Lynton was the hardest hilly terrain I've ever ridden on, and at some points, my mental dialogue was turning quite dark and doubting my ability to reach my goal. Breaking the journey into manageable chunks and focusing on one section/problem at a time with a positive mindset is what helped me make it to the destination for a great view (as seen in the photo!). -Listen to the locals: Despite planning to the best of my knowledge and technology, my cycle computer sometimes led me to places that didn't look right or to closed roads (Garmin, I'm open to being sponsored!). Taking time to consult the locals about which routes were best made a lot of difference in my experience and effectiveness in riding around. In business and projects, listen to those who have experience and know what they're talking about and be willing to change your plans accordingly. Your results will thank you for it, and those you listen to will respect you a lot more for listening! Side note: I calculated my carbon footprint very roughly using Value Match's carbon calculator powered by Carbon Footprint Ltd for this trip which came out to 0.06tCO2e! 0.05tCO2e of which is from my food and hostel accommodations and 0.01tCO2e is from a necessary taxi ride.
