Truthfully? If I'd backed this red car in, I'd have stepped out, taken a look at the space left on the footpath and thought to myself, 'there's enough room to get past'. . . . I wouldn't have thought about the fact that the whole width of the path needs to be accessible. ➡️ Because we often don't think of things like that until we need it. Then I saw the woman in the electric wheelchair, who tried to get through then called her children back to look for a different way past... And I know that car needed to move back to keep the road clear. But we, collectively, have to find better ways to make sure all people have access to the things they need for their wellbeing and a happy and healthy life. This is just an example. 🔵. The 'trouble' with being inclusive is that you have to think about what the experience would be like for people who are not the same as you. And that's not easy. 🔵. That is why empathy and lived experience are core elements to developing an inclusive workplace. They are essential. I have been in bliss this morning as I am remembering why I started Inclusion on the Slopes in the first place. When I discovered this picture of Billie Holiday, it touched my soul. I love this picture because it reminds me that there have been people who experienced snow! What there has not been is the inclusion of these unique perspectives. Here are some strategies to address that come to mind:   --- INCLUSIVE ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURES: Reset with inclusivity expectations. Ableism absolutely exists institutionally in our daily environments and workplaces. If the workplace only has the majority in mind and the minority is an afterthought, then it is intentionally causing barriers to disabled and neurodivergent individuals’ hire-abilities. Just from the job descriptions and requirements, if they mention that it is a must to have a DL and car with a perfect driving record in a job that has nothing to do with driving, or they require you to stand during your entire shift, or to lift heavy objects if your job isn’t described as a physical labor occupation, then the workplace is ableist and actively working against disabled and neurodivergent individuals, gatekeeping us from achieving and keeping employment. In addition, ableism applies if you are being harassed and micromanaged on restroom time, are being tone policed, having your voice silenced, and management lying about your employee conduct, performance, or attendance to make an excuse claim to get you fired. Your employer does not need to know the specifics about your disability in order for them to be ableist.
