Today is World Dense Breast Day! An important initiative to educate women about dense breast tissue and its impact on breast cancer screening https://ow.ly/s7yP50TtIyI Why it matters: • Dense breast tissue is common but can obscure tumors on mammograms • Women with dense breasts may benefit from supplemental screening • Adding an ultrasound to a mammogram helped detect 2 additional cancers per 1,000 women screened • Awareness empowers patients to have informed discussions with their healthcare providers Encourage colleagues and loved ones to learn about breast density and its implications for cancer detection. Together, we can make a difference in breast health awareness. #WorldDenseBreastDay

Game-changer in breast cancer screening! New rule mandates informing women with dense breast tissue about mammography limitations. This opens the door for crucial MRI screenings, offering higher sensitivity and improved detection rates. While patients shouldn't have to navigate this alone, it's a step towards more comprehensive care. Let's spread awareness and empower women to seek the most effective screening methods available. #BreastCancerAwareness #DenseBreastTissue #MRIScreening https://bit.ly/3ZwR4HN

Sobering reflection: 'the NHS can ill-afford to be a world leader in the adoption of poorly evaluated interventions that might be of little or no benefit, harm people, and waste resources that could be better used elsewhere'. Whilst #research and #innovation are absolutely critical for health and care service improvements, without robust, well-designed and comprehensive #evaluation, they won't deliver the benefits we all need for the #NHS! Nothing can be too high-profile to 'fail' - although conducting a ground-breaking trial that demonstrates an intervention or technology is not (yet?) ready for clinical implementation may be disappointing, this is how we can determine what really works for patients, professionals and the public. So it is reasonable that questions should be asked about the design, performance and evaluation of new technologies for health; and sometimes plans or timescales might need to change in the face of emerging evidence. Disclaimer: I am a massive fan of #precisionmedicine and #genomicmedicine; they are already delivering great things and there is more to come. But clearly, UK strengths in evaluation and implementation research matter just as much as those in discovery and development.

Physician-Scientist developed/provided proof of concept for the hypothesis that cancer is a disease of hypermosaicism, not clonality.
A story of personal pain, and hope, and advancements in diagnostics/invasive interventions. Yes, what you led as NIH-Chief has made significant improvements in the delivery of Healthcare. Just not so much on the frailties of the human mind. Good medical advice requires both knowledge, and the art.

There are some clinical issues that are incredibly difficult to address due to the lack of scientific evidence, yet have a major impact on our patients and their loved ones. One such issue is clinically assisted hydration (CAH) in the last days of our patients' lives. I hope that this article, which is deliberately aimed at real-world practice, will help you from now on. #MASCC #supportivecare #supponc

Patients are a Virtue! Thanks to John Emmerson (one of our CCC board members) from London Agency and Sara McLaughlin-Barrett from MedWise Consulting for hosting this insightful webinar on 'Clinical Trials and Tribulations'. Some key insights and quotes: "How is it that we are doing something to a patient and the patient isn't involved? We need to remember that clinical trials are about knowledge exchange and patients are the experts." Libby Noble Alexion Pharmaceuticals, Inc. "Patient organisations play an important role in helping to share information about clinical trials." Cathy Slattery Rare Cancers Australia "Sometimes patients perceive clinical trials as negative and that they are 'guinea pigs'. This could not be further from the truth." A/Prof Tom John Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre "Patients have so many questions like; where do I find out what clinical trials are available? Am I eligible? How much does it cost? Will I be on placebo? Will I have a multidisciplinary team? What is a clinical trial?" DAVID YOUNG The complete webinar is now live, and you can watch it here. https://lnkd.in/ganG6nYG Feel free to share this among your networks.
