Nice to see the NEJM promoting a food-as-medicine approach! I could see pairing this with Froedtert and ThedaCare's Seasons app that develops meal recommendations tailored to underlying conditions and patient preferences, but adding delivered meals based on these recommendations to patients who are experiencing food insecurity. Initial data suggest that this approach improves blood glucose control and I like the idea of spending some of the money that we might spend on Ozempic or other GLP-1 agonists on local farmers to provide food for medically tailored meals.

Soon the EPA will be releasing the New Lead and Copper Rule that protects public health by minimizing lead and copper levels in drinking water. The rule will require water systems to identify and replace lead and pipes, better to protect children at schools and childcare facilities, and provide more j formation to communities about their weter quality. The POMS has been updated to reflect a regulatory change that revises the definition of a public assistance (PA) household from a household in which every member receives some kind of public income-maintenance (PIM) payment to a household that has both an #SSI applicant or recipient, and at least one other household member who receives one or more of the listed PIM payments (the any other definition) in this section. In addition, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (#SNAP) has been added to the list of PA household programs, effective 09/30/2024. The recommended #protein intake of 1.25-1.5 g/kg body weight per day for adults with #pressure #injuries is higher than the general population's needs. This elevated intake is due to several factors: 🔹Increased Protein Needs for #Wound Healing: Protein is essential for the synthesis of #collagen and other proteins involved in #tissue repair. Adequate protein intake helps in the formation of new tissues and #blood vessels and aids in the repair of damaged tissues. 🔹Prevention of #Muscle Wasting: Individuals with pressure injuries, especially those who are immobile or #bedridden, are at risk of muscle wasting. Higher protein intake helps maintain muscle mass and strength, which is crucial for mobility and preventing further injury. 🔹Support for the Immune System: Protein is #vital for the production of antibodies and other #immune system components. A robust immune response is necessary to prevent and fight infections, which are common complications in pressure injuries. 🔹Compensating for Protein Losses: Pressure injuries can lead to protein loss through wound #exudate. The recommended protein intake helps compensate for these losses and ensures the body has enough resources for healing. 🔹🔹In #summary, the recommendation of 1.25-1.5 g protein/kg body weight per day ensures that adults with pressure injuries receive sufficient protein to support the increased demands of wound healing and overall recovery.
