An ambitious new suite of telescopes at Carnegie’s Las Campanas Observatory will create a spectroscopic map of our Milky Way galaxy and other nearby galaxies, enabling a new understanding of how they form and evolve. “I approach the LVM through the lens of our theoretical understanding of galaxy and star formation—the physical conditions of plasma as it goes through different cosmic cycles,” explained SDSS-V Director Juna Kollmeier, the Founding Director of the Carnegie Theoretical Astrophysics Center and current director of the Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics. “For decades, we have been doing calculations that zoom-in on these processes, but what was missing was the empirical benchmark. The LVM attempts to provide this reality check: observational targets against which our understanding can be challenged and deepened." https://lnkd.in/gMEeE6nf

"Black holes have no internal structure and are therefore boring, but neutron stars are deeply mysterious, featuring matter at densities that far exceed what can be found in ordinary nuclear matter in laboratories. A key to an understanding of their interior comes from the tidal deformation of each neutron star when the binary system is approaching merger, and its imprint on the emitted gravitational waves." A full recording of today's blackboard talk with Prof. Eric Poisson from University of Guelph will be published on Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics's website: https://lnkd.in/ghrnjy46

Thank you Irina Tziamali for the highly engaging content you presented to us over two days - a wonderful workshop on a very important topic! The two day workshop on EDI, with Irina Tziamali from Inclusive Minds was made possible through a partnership between the Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics, the Dunlap Institute and DADDAA, with additional sponsorship from the McDonald Institute Advancing EDI fund. The seminar called "Unraveling EDI" discussed the dimensions of diversity, the categorization of marginalized groups, as well as the implicit norms, cultural dynamics, and power structures within organizations such as the military and academia. Drawing on real life examples from both, Irina poignantly outlined the implications of inclusion and exclusion of groups within organizations, and then offered tips on how to counter exclusionary behaviors.

Can somebody pinch me?! 🇨🇦🥹❤️ Inclusive Minds went to Canada! I’m thrilled to share that I’ve had the honor of conducting a 2-day EDI (Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion) training for the esteemed David A. Dunlap Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics Department at the University of Toronto, Canada. 🚀🌌 This was more than just a training session; it was a milestone for both my personal and professional growth. Representing my company on the international stage for the first time was so exciting, and the engagement from the brilliant minds at UofT was nothing short of inspiring. Bart Ripperda thank you for the opportunity to get to know the Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics and for organizing this event! Stay tuned for more insights! And if you’re curious about an EDI training at your organization, let’s connect! #EDI #InclusiveMinds #Astronomy #Astrophysics #UniversityOfToronto #InternationalTraining #DiversityInSTEM #WomenInSTEM
