Diversity without inclusion is like a seed without soil, full of potential but unable to grow.
Instilling a sense of belonging is the theme of this year's International Day of #WomenInMining, giving all people a chance to grow and thrive.

Women account for about 1/3 of the Artisanal and Small-scale Mining (ASM) workforce. But poor working conditions, sanitation, and violence, as well as domestic work, disproportionately impact their health and earnings, relegating them to low-paying roles and 90 times more at risk of death than men. Our new report highlights solutions: https://lnkd.in/eURkK8ie
Recently our colleague Rosemary Addico took part in the panel "Advancing social protections for a gender inclusive artisanal and small-scale mining sector". Hosted by Delve, who have just released their State of the #ASM Sector report on #Gender#Equality, this panel explored the underprivileged position of #women in ASM #gold mining communities in #Ghana.
Some conclusion: 1) This underprivileged position is a reflection of the role of women in their communities, 2) this position is self-fulfilling because it also hinders their economic and social development. 3) Change for these women requires #accesstofinance, training on financial literacy, and the development of a local infrastructure that is supportive of business.

30% of artisanal miners, 13.5 million by the numbers, are women.
Women face specific challenges in #asm that range from subtle bias and lack of access to higher paying roles in the sector through to sexual violence.
Gender equality is essential. On a basic level, it is about dignity and equality of opportunity for a huge number of individuals. On a deeper level, it is about #humanrights adherence as well as the role women play as traditional community members in helping catalyze #sustainabledevelopment.
The Blended Capital Group and our partners are committed to reimagining outcomes in ASM. We know that formalization delivers dignity and productivity of work in commercially realistic ways that make sense to #impactinvestment and #mininginvestment. We know that productivity also means #criticalminerals. We know that gender diversity is enhanced, a smart thing and an inherently good thing. We know that now is the time. Back in mid-2022, directly to my face I had a work colleague say to me immediately after a management meeting I had attended that Gender Equity was “discrimination against men”
All I was endeavouring to to do at that specific meeting was to get the topic of Diversity put onto the monthly meeting agenda to start the conversation. There really had been no conversation relating to how male dominated the organisation was and that there really hadn’t been any corporate focus on this for around 10 years.
In May 2022, I was successful with this push to have Diversity discussed at our monthly management team meetings, but interestingly enough, when I had to step away from my role at Main Roads Western Australia some 6 months later due to over-exposure to psychosocial hazards, my Director removed this item off the agenda.
I was the only female senior manager on that management team, so maybe he thought that because I no longer attended, and with an all male management team, there was no longer a need to have the discussion.
Take a look at the commentary and attitudes of other former colleagues of mine have.. they very much align with this FinReview article.
If a Government of Western Australia agency can’t understand the importance of gender equity and can’t lead best practice in this area, then really, how can they ask everyone else to do this. Not supporting those who try to work for change, not acknowledging or addressing concerns when they are raised with management means there really is systemic issues preventing change..

Mining’s push for gender diversity threatened by ‘Andrew Tate’ effect
A belief that women are being promoted based on gender, rather than ability, has permeated to middle management and boardroom level, according to some female leaders.
Deshnee Naidoo has spent her career climbing the ladder in mining and feels the mindset change towards women has been “phenomenal”.
But lately, the former head of Vale Base Metals, a nickel and cobalt producer, has noticed a worrying backlash.
When candidates from diverse backgrounds secure jobs, some men in the industry have started using the acronym DEI — diversity, equity and inclusion — in a derogatory reframing: “Didn’t Earn It.”

The mining industry's male dominance is complemented by the unique strengths and differences that women bring.
With the spirit of DEI (diversity, equality, and inclusivity), we can bring about change and innovative solutions.
