We are seeing canals with solar covers able to produce MORE electricity (cooling panels) while increasing the effectiveness of canal (reduced evaporation).
1 MW every 1000’, tapped directly into the distribution grid. So ~5MW per mile.
This means that each mile of canal can generate 4000 miles of vehicle travel per hour of sunlight. Said another way, 4000 road vehicles can be powered by each mile of canal (more than 1 vehicle per second), are able to be powered with solar covered canals.
Just another example of how flexible solar is in being able to provide low cost energy where it’s needed.
Thousands of miles of canals stretch across the U.S. A pilot project on tribal land in Arizona shows the benefits of covering these waterways with solar panels.
