More steps forward in working better together
We recently formed the region’s first hospital group with North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust and are delighted to reveal our new hospital group identity. We are University Hospitals Tees and we are Caring Better Together. Our two trusts remain as separate organisations- keeping their existing identities- but going forward, we will collectively be known as University Hospitals Tees. Over the last few months, our two organisations have been engaging with staff, patients, and service users to agree on the group name, branding, and strapline – Caring Better Together. This exciting development comes after years of joint working across the two trusts to ensure the best care for our patients and communities across the Tees Valley and beyond. Jessie May’s CEO, Daniel Cheesman, responds to the Government announcement that NHS funding for children’s hospices will continue into 2025/26. “Today’s announcement is a positive step for children’s hospices, and we are grateful for the support from the Government. The £26 million in funding for children’s hospices is vital, and we look forward to understanding more about how it will be distributed. While this is great news, we are also committed to working with the Government to secure a longer-term solution for the funding of children’s palliative care services, ensuring sustainability for the future. Families rely on services like ours every day, and we must ensure that funding is not just temporary but a secure part of our healthcare system for years to come.”

The power of advocacy. The news this week about additional funding for children's hospices made my day. Because they do such vital work to support families. I know the power of human interest to bring issues into the spotlight and charities like Together for Short Livesalso know that. Case studies bring an issue to life so it resonates with the wider public. It is one of the reasons I am always happy to talk about my little girl Tilly and how we 'normalise' the conversation around living with complex needs. Because rare conditions are rare, so if we aren't raising awareness and bringing it into the mainstream who is? I can do it because my background is in media relations, crisis management and investigative journalism. I am all to aware what that means in terms of how I can and do advocate. Empowering other parents to be able to advocate for their children and whatever that looks like for them, and supporting charities to raise awareness of what they can and do achieve, is really important to me. Charities might not have a dedicated comms function, or know how to manage a crisis, or advocate when something really detrimental happens to their funding, or a story hits the media about their work in a negative way. That is why this success around hospice funding is so important. Charities working together to advocate to ensure their future helping our most vulnerable is secure. That is massive. I am always happy to help or support in whichever way I can to make sure issues are raised or brought into the spotlight so change can happen, or care can be accessed. Which is why despite feeling really vulnerable doing it, I spoke to media for the Assisted Dying debate and why I will always help charities as and when I can if they have an issue that needs media support. That includes Together for Short Livesand Rett UK. So, if you are reading this as a charity or working in that sector, and have a question about something, or know you will need support in the next few months, DM me and if I can help I will. Because the power of advocacy can and does change lives. You only have to read about the funding news below to see that. And the responsibility I feel is on all of us to use our skillset to support positive change where we can. And Merry Christmas everyone! #advocacy #mediarelations #hospices #charities #positivechange
🆕 Huge news today on funding for children’s hospices in England. Together, we have successfully campaigned, and our voices have been heard. This morning, we warmly welcome the UK Government’s decision to increase NHS England funding for children’s hospices to £26 million in 2025/26. In addition, there will also be a £100m in capital funding for all children’s and adults’ hospices in England this year and next, enabling improvements in facilities, IT systems, and outdoor spaces to enhance palliative and end of life care. This is brilliant and most welcome news for our children’s hospices and the families that use their lifeline services. Thank you to Health and Social Care Secretary Wes Streeting for listening to us and the voices of seriously ill children, families and children’s hospices. We look forward to working with you on the details. We also relish the opportunity to shape the NHS 10-Year Plan to make sure seriously ill children and their families can access the palliative care they need, when and where they need it – in hospitals, children’s hospices and in the community.
