We are thrilled to celebrate 50 years of the University of Minnesota's Leman Swine Conference this week! During yesterday's poster session, Dr. Francisco Domingues presented the newest data on the effect of sanitized feed on ASFV. Feed is a fomite for swine viruses, and studies have shown that specific ingredient matrices can enhance virus survival. Preventing virus transmission through contaminated feed is achievable with proper protocols in place. A feed sanitizer, in all tested concentrations, demonstrated complete virus inactivation within one hour, making it a powerful biosecurity tool for mitigating ASFV in commercial swine feed. Poultry producers know that better bird performance relies on gut health. Why? Because the gut has an important role in immunity and overall wellness that influence nutrient absorption, growth rates, and resistance to disease. High-quality feed that is well-formulated and free from contaminants helps maintain a healthy gut environment, allowing beneficial microorganisms to thrive. Chick quality and livability is largely impacted by hatchery conditions. In a study done by The University of Georgia, hens were fed Termin-8-treated feed or a control diet from 25 -60 weeks of age. The impact of the feed treatment was assessed through hen performance, the microbial load of feed and eggshells, chick quality and livability. A recent study by Iowa State University showed an ASF outbreak would result in a $79.5 billion impact on the pork and beef industries. It would impact 60,000 industry workers with job loss. Pork prices would drop between 50-60%. It would take three years to recover. ASF can survive for extended periods in pork products and the feed ingredients derived from them. When contaminated feed enters a pig's environment, it can introduce the virus and contribute to its spread within a herd. Wrapping up a week of clean feed with some of Asia's largest swine producers. Yesterday, Dr. Francisco Domingues teamed up with SHS International to discuss feed biosecurity strategies post-ASF outbreak. A recent study simulated the shipping of feed ingredients from Eastern Europe to the US, and scientists proved ASFV survived in feed ingredients for at least 30 days. Other researchers have reported a half-life of the virus in soya-based products ranging between 9.6 and 12.4 days. Enhancing biosecurity and monitoring throughout the production system requires oversight of the ingredients/raw materials that come into feed mills. Producers can help minimize the risk of disease outbreaks and protect animal health by using feed pathogen control solutions and implementing a comprehensive biosecurity program. One of the main challenges in antibiotic-free production is the prevention of bacterial infections in the gut. Managing the gut microbiome is a critical challenge in ABF production. The role of the poultry microbiome can contribute or interfere with the digestion of nutrients, protect or harm physical gut integrity, support intestinal immunity and prevent the colonization of pathogens. Feed quality plays a critical role in the health and performance of commercial poultry, especially through its direct impact on the microbiome, which is particularly sensitive to changes in feed composition and microbial quality. Poor quality feed can lead to dysbiosis, resulting in reduced nutrient absorption, increased pathogen prevalence and decreased overall health and productivity.
