I was thrilled to share my knowledge with Foresters Financial and their staff across 3 countries about how to ensure that their Black staff feel very much included at work. Using my experience as a Social Worker, Psychotherapist and Wellness Consultant, I used research & data as I talked about the urgent need for this conversation, the current experience of Black individuals at work, the detrimental effects of a lack of inclusion and the need to push past the status quo. Of course we discussed to great benefits of intentional inclusion. The question we all need to ask ourselves now is: who is in charge of “inclusion” in the workplace? The very term implies that the workplace belongs to a person/group and that it’s theirs to include/exclude at will. There is still so much work to be done. #corporateconsultant #hrconsulting
At Foresters, we believe in the strength of diversity and are committed to fostering an environment where every voice is heard and valued. #BlackHistoryMonth provides us with an opportunity to deepen our understanding and appreciation of the Black community’s rich heritage. Throughout February we celebrated the Black community at Foresters through events and articles showcasing Black achievement and highlighting challenges still present today. To close out our celebrations, our Black@Foresters employee resource group hosted a learning session with Roxanne Francis, MSW, RSW, about Black inclusion in the workplace. The interactive session featured discussions on allyship, challenges, and opportunities. Learn more about IDE at Foresters: https://ow.ly/tK1H50QJmgz #ThisIsForesters #diversityandinclusion

With our offices closed today for Juneteenth, we didn’t want to miss the opportunity to honor and celebrate the importance of all that this day represents. Juneteenth commemorates the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. This occurred a full two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth honors the end of slavery in the United States and marks the day that all enslaved people finally learned of their emancipation. While it’s been nearly 200 years since slavery officially came to an end, we recognize that there is still work to be done when it comes to tackling the biases and systemic racism that is still present within our society. Whether it be our work through the The Diversity Marketing Consortium to smaller efforts like yesterday’s catered team lunch from Field Trip Catering, a Black-owned business located in Morningside Heights & Harlem, it is core to who we are at SourceCode to continue supporting, elevating, and celebrating the Black community. We hope that everyone will find their own way to do the same (and, not just today!) whether it be shopping at a local black-owned business, celebrating this vibrant community’s contributions to art and culture through books, movies, or music, or educating yourselves about how to be a better ally and supporter. Are there any resources you have found insightful or celebrations you’re participating in? Drop in the comments below so we can all learn from each other. #juneteenth #juneteenthcelebration #culture #sourceocdestrong

To honor Black history month, let’s make progress in housing equity. Let’s distinguish affordable housing from public housing when discussing housing equity. And did you know that only “46.4% of Black American families own homes compared to 75.8% of white families” and that homes in predominantly Black neighborhoods across the US are valued less than those located in predominantly white neighborhoods for a significant cumulative loss in equity. This is a result of systemic racism, legacies of slavery, Jim Crow segregation, redlining, and other anti-Black policies that targeted Black people and Black neighborhoods. #blackhistorymonth, #Housingequity, #itsanewday, #wearehere, #collectiveaction, #endit

In honoring and celebrating #Juneteenth, we recognize that there is more to be done to continue amplifying Black voices and fighting for a more equitable future. In the face of the recent DEI backlash and lawsuits against organizations like Fearless Fund, we believe that organizations must come together and define strategies for pushing back and advancing the work we know is critically important to closing the racial wealth gap. At Halcyon, we are more committed than ever to diversity, equity, and inclusion and creating an environment where those with ambition get access to the resources they need.

Juneteenth is not just Black history; it is American history. It is a celebration of freedom, opportunity, equity, and access. We honor #Juneteenth not only through recognition but also as an opportunity to learn and grow as a company. This week, our Black Employee Network Employee Resource Group will host a panel discussion, Juneteenth: A Celebration of Freedom and Resilience, for the entire firm exploring the history and lasting impact of Juneteenth while also addressing the current landscape of diversity, equity, and inclusion. In addition to honoring and celebrating the remarkable strides and achievements of the Black community, we will provide resources for community members and allies who want to learn more and take action to promote positive change and progress. We encourage everyone to learn more about Juneteenth's significance, the complex history of the struggles faced by the Black community, and how to get involved in progressing equality in and outside the workplace.
