A little more than a year ago we decided we wanted another dog to play with Tori our super playful jack russel pit mix. We are huge proponents of rescue dogs. We found a website where people listed dogs in need because none of the shelters in our area had the breeds we were looking for. After a few months of searching a sweet couple got back in contact with us and we agreed to meet at a dog park (it’s best to introduce pets on neutral ground). Both dogs played well together at the park. The couple basically dumped their dog on us even though we agreed to give it a try for a few weeks. The dog we rescued was named Athena and we typically call her Tina now. We noticed some hyper aggressive behaviors in Tina after a few days but it took some time to figure out Tina’s triggers and Tori’s triggers as well. Two things we’ve learned from the process of integrating a new dog into our family are; it’s a process and improvement takes time. The second thing we learned is Tina is absolutely fearless! The video below was taken recently. She jumped in the lake and went for a swim. Some of you reading this might be wondering how to start something new. Take a lesson from Tina and jump in the water. Did you know that in a recent survey of assistance dog handlers in the UK: - 78% of partnerships were denied access to service providers due to a "no dogs" policy - 67% were refused entry because their assistance dog was not a guide dog - 61% were asked for documentation or registration - 50% of assistance dog teams experienced their dog being shouted at - 39% were told their dog couldn't be an assistance dog based on factors like color, breed, or vest - 25% reported incidents of their assistance dog being kicked or hit while working If you want to make a difference, consider joining the Infinity Dogs CIC #JustDont public information campaign.
