This was the hard reality about our client's desalination facility. Our MENA Region client, Despite with regular maintenance schedules. In the past few months, their plant performance affected, due to microbial development that blocks membranes, even with frequent antiscalant use. We analyzed their data, - The falling flow rates. - The rising pressure. - The microbial tests. - The Direct membrane inspection. - The cleaning frequency. The byproduct of seawater desalination—brine—is an important source for extracting magnesium chloride, used in various industrial processes. Brine contains high concentrations of magnesium chloride and is typically extracted through evaporation methods. Initially, brine undergoes pretreatment to remove impurities and other salts. Subsequently, the pretreated brine is placed in evaporation ponds where solar energy or heating devices accelerate water evaporation, gradually concentrating the magnesium chloride solution. As the solution reaches a certain concentration, magnesium chloride begins to crystallize, followed by separation and refining processes to obtain high-purity magnesium chloride products. This method not only effectively utilizes the byproduct of seawater desalination but also aligns with principles of environmental sustainability. The basic aspect of electrodialysis with bipolar membranes (#EDBM or #BEDM) is the combination of electrodialysis for salt separation with Cation and Anion Exchange Membranes for the conversion of a salt solution or brine into its corresponding acid and base. Today I watched an inspiring webinar by #IDE's Alex Drak titled Green Chemicals from Seawater. To lower the environmental footprint of Desalination, #IDE use proven chemical engineering processes to produce their own CaCO3 (for remineralization), CO2, HCl and NaOH (for CIP cleaning and pH adjustment) from their #SWRO brine reject streams.
