99% CO2 Capture goal of the FOCUSS project Here's more about it 👇 SSE Thermal's FOCUSS project: making carbon capture work even when power plants aren't. Goal: Achieve 95-99% CO₂ capture during plant start-up, shutdown, and power changes. How? By storing amine solvent before it's used to trap CO₂. When a plant starts up, it can't make steam right away for CO₂ removal. FOCUSS stores "lean" (CO₂-free) solvent to keep capturing during this time. The CO₂-rich solvent is then stored until steam is available to clean it. Early tests at the TERC pilot plant show this works well. They reached 95-99% capture rates, even in challenging conditions. More tests are happening now, mimicking cold and hot plant starts. Also, they want to use "Early Steam" from gas plants to clean solvents during start-up. Gas plants make steam before turbines are ready; usually, it's wasted. FOCUSS could use this steam to clean stored solvents, saving time and energy. This might let plants store less solvent and still capture CO₂ from the start. All FOCUSS findings will be public, helping the whole industry.
