Had a great conversation with Caitlin MacGregor, CEO of Plum, at Communitech yesterday morning. Terrific to see 100+ founders eager and ready to engage at 7:30am. Rosie MacLennan, two-time Olympic gold medalist, led off the session, talking about the parallels between competitive athletics and being a founder. Caitlin and I spoke about building strong founder/investor relationships. Key points: - The average relationship duration of a successful company with its early stage investors is 15 years, which is longer than the average marriage. Choose your investors wisely. - The foundation of any strong relationship is mutual trust, respect, and authenticity. The best founder/investor relationships are a collaborative partnership. - It is easier for investors to invest in a movie than a photograph.
