Manufacturing internships are one of the most effective methods for building your company’s talent pipeline. In my role as project manager for workforce programs at Iowa State University’s Center for Industrial Research and Service (CIRAS), I help manufacturers build their pipeline of manufacturing talent with an internship program focused on students from diverse, underrepresented groups. This is one of the many workforce-related programs offered across the MEP National Network™ by MEP Centers in every state and Puerto Rico. #CapEx #Manufacturing #ManufacturingNews #BusinessNews

Can you go into sales with an engineering background? The short answer is yes. My guest this week, Chloe Rubinowicz, is an electrical engineering graduate, and gets to experience new things every day. Instead of just one specialty, she’s constantly learning about cool, new projects from her clients and is really having fun at work. What a concept! Though she wasn’t able to obtain an internship during the pandemic, she managed to work around it. Internships are important, but projects and other experiences are possible, if you keep your options open and explore what’s available. How’d she get experience without an internship? She entered a competition, applied herself, made it to the final round, and then? You’ll have to listen in. Her lessons to share: 👍Start sooner and take advantage of all the resources available to you 👍Act with a sense of urgency, not panic 👍Find alumni connections and take advantage of the alumni board Companies are looking to see what you’re able to do, the soft skills you bring, and what you can offer whether it’s from an internship, a project, or a competition. It’s your job to figure out how to show employers what you’re capable of. #inspiration #careersuccess https://lnkd.in/g2Y3ucpn

I’ve seen hundreds upon hundreds of posts this week of great companies celebrating the great work their interns did this summer. The job skills, but more importantly the culture and industry connection and experiences they encounter shape them and help to refocus their educational and eventual career plans as they go back to school this Fall. Part of me cannot help but wonder why we seem to extend these opportunities to primarily only college students. If the skilled trades could harness that same number of potential future employees in some sort of internship, job shadow, or co-op for the summer, utilizing young men and women who otherwise would have no exposure to our mechanical/electrical/construction, what a difference it could make in so many lives and could completely flip the script on the biased beliefs that “no one wants to work anymore”. The average high school graduate can list on two hands the number of professions available, not for a lack of intellect, but our failure to get in front of them in any significant numbers to educate them on the many opportunities out there. I understand this would be a monumental lift, but I know so many people that would reach out a hand and help carry this load, that we could get it done. Let’s educate America’s future instead of make biased assumptions about them. #skilledtrades #successdoesntrequireadegree #industrial #commercial #internship

Gen Z in Manufacturing Ep. 9: Taking Risks at Internships and Finding Meaning Full Time This video Gen Z in Manufacturing: Finding Purpose and Passion caught our eye, and it's a must-watch for anyone in manufacturing, especially those looking to attract young talent. The video features Bryce Walters, a 26-year-old manufacturing robotics engineer at Lockheed Martin, who shares his journey and perspective on the industry. Here are some key takeaways: Finding purpose: Manufacturing might not be the first field that comes to mind when you think of meaningful careers. But for Walters, knowing his work contributes to national security brings a sense of fulfilment. This highlights the importance of showcasing the impactful projects young engineers can work on in manufacturing. The value of hands-on experience: The video underscores the importance of revamping internships to resonate with Gen Z. Walters emphasises that interns crave hands-on experience and taking ownership of projects, not busy work. Manufacturing companies can take note: invest in quality internships that provide real-world challenges and mentorship. Importance of taking risks in internships: Bryce Walters emphasises how his early internship at a small company allowed him to take risks and learn quickly. He suggests that companies give interns challenging projects and the freedom to experiment, fostering a culture where risk-taking is encouraged for accelerated growth. Mentorship matters: Walters credits mentorship as a key factor in his development. This reinforces the need for strong mentorship programs to foster well-rounded young talent in manufacturing. If you're in manufacturing, how can you attract and retain Gen Z talent? Share your thoughts in the comments! #manufacturing #genz #engineering #careers #mentorship #futureofwork #careers #Barnbrook
