Communication Consultant @ martinsvaneborg.dk ∣ Coffee lover ∣ Book lover ∣ Fan of the intricacies of communication.
Why Communication? The value of honest and open conversation is an antidote to ideological obsession. ✍︎ ... You can get so caught up in your beliefs if you’re never exposed to other opinions or to open conversation; if you’re never slightly offended or occasionally have your beliefs gently nudged around. Then your beliefs are no longer beliefs, because if you only believed then said belief could be changed, given the right perspective at the right time. But your belief has become an ideological obsession you treat as a fact. Likewise, but opposite, that shadow of yours; that unconscious world of darkness within us can persuade us of the unmistakable awfulness and ugliness of ourselves. No one is better at deceiving us than ourselves. ... The above is from my latest Linkedin article "How an 80s B-movie Can Change Communication." Just finished listening to an absolutely amazing podcast featuring Lewis Howes and Charles Duhigg on becoming a super communicator. Charles Duhigg a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter and two-time New York Times best-selling author, shares insights on connecting with people in more meaningful ways and building healthier, lasting relationships through the power of communication. Our conversations can generally be categorized into three types: 1. Practical Conversations: Discussions based on logic, often aimed at finding solutions. 2. Emotional Conversations: Exchanges where vulnerability is present. 3. Social Conversations: Interactions that help build and maintain social bonds. It's crucial to recognize the state of mind of the person we are interacting with. If they are coming from a place of emotion and we respond from a practical standpoint, we risk not truly listening to each other. In emotional conversations, empathy is key. Creating a safe space for the other person to express themselves can lead to deeper connections and understanding. Link: https://lnkd.in/gPR_2Yki

Maybe you're born with it... Maybe you aren't... Maybe. Just maybe. You can learn it. One of the softest (read as "most ignored") of the soft skills is communication, and without communication, what do we have? Arguably... nothing. And witness the corporate world around you - a sea of "communications" that are worthless, voluminous, and never-ending. (aside: oh how I absolutely despise "soft skills" as a term - it's so often used as an insult) If you're reading this, congratulations, communication has occurred! But will I get you to want to learn about becoming a better communicator? I'm betting yes. I'm on a quest to find guests who are really good at communicating what they do, and how to do it well. And in this case, my guest is a bonafide expert in communications, Mr. Matt Kohut! We pull from a whole lotta experiences, dive into the power of storytelling, and debunk the myths of the greatest orators of our time, who we seem to collectively believe were born masters of communication... The great news is that there is so much more known about great communication now, as well as experts and technology that can help us hone our abilities, that it's truly a golden age of communication opportunity. Looking for easy tips to talk better with people? . . . Then you need to check this one out 🙂 Podcasts are my go-to while driving, And Mel Robbins Podcast never disappoints 🙂 But this latest episode with Jefferson Fisher? is an absolute goldmine. 💡 It left me with some practical, game-changing communication tips that: ✔️can elevate how you interact with others, whether it’s at work or in your personal life. Here are my top takeaways that lit up my brain 💡💡💡 1. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘀𝗮𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗿𝗲 Your words are a reflection of your personality, so choose them wisely. The power of communication is in compressing your entire personality into what people hear from you. 2. 𝗙𝗹𝗶𝗽 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗽𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘁 When someone misinterprets your words, don’t rush to defend yourself. Instead, ask: “𝑊ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑑𝑖𝑑 𝑦𝑜𝑢 ℎ𝑒𝑎𝑟?” This simple question: ✔️will immediately calms down the other person and ✔️will clarify what they heard versus what you meant, Allowing for a more productive conversation where you can explain your true intentions. 3. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗔𝗰𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 Want someone to show a specific trait or skill that can serve you during a situation? Acknowledge it. Phrases like: “𝐼 𝑘𝑛𝑜𝑤 𝑦𝑜𝑢’𝑟𝑒 𝑜𝑝𝑒𝑛-𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑑𝑒𝑑” or “𝐼 𝑘𝑛𝑜𝑤 𝑦𝑜𝑢’𝑟𝑒 𝑢𝑛𝑑𝑒𝑟𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑑𝑖𝑛𝑔” will encourages them to align with that trait, helping you get a more favourable outcome. 4. 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐛𝐥𝐚𝐦𝐞 Instead of saying, “𝑌𝑜𝑢 𝑐𝑎𝑢𝑠𝑒𝑑 𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑠 𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑏𝑙𝑒𝑚,” try, “𝑊𝑒 ℎ𝑎𝑣𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑠 𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑏𝑙𝑒𝑚, 𝑙𝑒𝑡’𝑠 𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑣𝑒 𝑖𝑡 𝑡𝑜𝑔𝑒𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟.” This shift turns conflict into teamwork, making the other person feel like a partner in finding a solution. …And much more! 🚀 💬 so If you want actionable advice on improving your communication skills, don’t miss this one... #Communication #Leadership #PodcastRecommendation #PersonalDevelopment
