This Curry's store in Wednesbury, West Midlands, was once a PC World — a place that holds a pivotal moment in my career journey. Back in 1994, I was working full-time in credit underwriting, doing well, but feeling like I could do more. I casually mentioned this to my manager, not expecting much to come of it. A few days later, I got the tap on the shoulder. " Can we have a chat?" Usually, that phrase spells trouble, but not this time. "You know how you said you wanted to do more?" she asked. "Well, I have an opportunity for you." The bank had just partnered with PC World to offer instant free credit to customers. The Wednesbury store was set to be a flagship, and they needed someone on-site to handle any issues. She wanted me to represent the bank at the store’s grand opening. This was huge. I was thrilled… until the nerves kicked in. Where on earth was Wednesbury? How would I get there? Was it even in my dad's A-Z? (Remember, this was before Google Maps.) I didn’t even own a decent suit! And what if I had problems? I didn’t know a soul in the store. These concerns seem trivial now, but I was just 20, still living with my parents, and this felt monumental. But I figured it out, and those few days in store went brilliantly. I learned so much, grew in confidence, and it set me on a path to further my career. Life is full of opportunities, but that little voice in your head (yes, *that* voice) can easily talk you out of them. What I’ve learned is that growth happens outside your comfort zone. You have to step into discomfort and face your fears to become a better version of yourself. If I hadn’t spoken up, I might still be underwriting car finance for used cars today! What if, instead of laughing all the way to the bank, you actually laughed at the bank as well? The Western U.S. Bank Umpqua is known for its amazing culture, fun, and extraordinary commitment to customer service, which perhaps justifies the confident way they answer their phones: "Thank-you for calling Umpqua, the world's greatest bank." Here are just a few things Umpqua does to stand out: - They actively seek out ways to be "un-bank like" (a great exercise for any business to engage in). - They "hire for the smile"- focusing on personality traits instead of technical skills. - They begin each day at each store (they refer to branches as "stores" to stress the importance of creating a welcoming retail experience) with a team Motivational Moment which could include speed checkers, a trivia game, inspirational reading, or a spirited game of marshmallow dodge ball. - Stores have funds to help them connect to their community in a fun way. Some stores screen films, some periodically provide sandwich or ice cream trucks for customers, while others might have events that involve their customers' dogs. One store has a counter just inside the main doors that is rented to various local merchants on a revolving basis. Unused space in stores is often put to creative use such as displaying local artwork, hosting yoga classes, or group stitching sessions. - They strive to surprise customers in unexpected ways. Tellers might hand out a chocolate with each cash withdrawal, and rather than targeting potential customers with junk mail ads, one store attached small flyers to 1,700 potted plants and distributed them to potential customers' doorsteps. The dynamics of retail theft in the different American cities are very troublesome. Houston and LA top the charts, but Glendale is surprisingly low, thanks to its no-nonsense policing. The Glendale Police Department's prompt actions and zero-tolerance approach are commendable, setting them apart from their counterparts. Their proactive approach, though beneficial in curbing theft, has its pitfalls, like the unfortunate incident of a minor losing his life in a chase, leading to a costly lawsuit for the store involved. Unless this issue is promptly dealt with, the future of physical stores is uncertain. Interesting perspective on how the media can create a false perception of 'the death of retail stores'. Stores aren't going away. For traditional fashion brands and multi-brand retailers, stores consistently bringing in more sales than digital channels. That means it's wise to invest as much in brick-and-mortar customer experiences, operational efficiency and data analytics as you do for your digital assets - if not much more #retailstores #retailstrategy #retailtech
Today I received a letter from my bank that theyw ere closing my local branch. That made me think and I did a bit of research. In 2022, 8,060 bank and building society branches were open in the UK. This was down 40% from the 13,345 branches open in 2012. Compare this with the graph below that shows that the number of clothing stores have actually increased since 2012. As Neil Saunders often says. The News focus on store closings but not on store openings and this creates a false perception. Finance is clearly a digital product. A pair of jeans is not. I have not been in a bank branch for years but I visited a store last week. So stores are here to stay. The challenge is to bring them up to the level of control, optimization and experience that online-retail has driven over the last years. One of our key missions here at Nexite
