Beyond Harmony Week The significance of March 21st as the UN International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination has been diminished, as observed in Western Australia's Harmony Week, which has devolved into a mere spectacle of cook-offs and colourful photo opportunities for politicians, bureaucrats, and business executives who lack substantive engagement with the pressing issues of racism and discrimination in Australia. This trivialisation is evident when considering the perspective of our Indigenous community. It is far simpler for these figures to engage in superficial festivities than to confront the realities of racism and discrimination experienced by Indigenous peoples and other marginalised groups. Furthermore, the celebration of diversity appears hollow when migrant professionals, such as doctors, engineers, and dentists, find themselves relegated to menial tasks such as driving Ubers, cleaning offices, or working at petrol stations. This underscores the urgent need for meaningful discourse and actionable measures to address systemic inequalities and combat racism and discrimination. Harmony Week is a waste of taxpayers’ money and an even bigger waste of community resources, let’s end this colonial mockery of multicultural communities and the economic contribution of migrants in Western Australia. Please focus on what communities want – Jobs, Jobs, Jobs (that was the election commitment), education and to see migrants thriving at the highest levels of business and society. As a young migrant, I say…… please set us up for success and to be taken seriously……. because Harmony Week is only setting us up for failure. #nomoreharmonyweek #westernaustralia #racism #discriminations

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission outlined 94 Calls to Action, with the federal government responsible for 76 of them. Indigenous Watchdog reports that 11 Calls are complete, and 39 are in progress, making up 66% of the total. Today, I highlight Call to Action 92, which urges corporate Canada to: - Engage in meaningful consultation and secure consent from Indigenous peoples before economic development projects. - Ensure equitable access to opportunities for Aboriginal peoples and deliver sustainable benefits to their communities. - Provide education on Indigenous history, Treaties, and human rights, fostering intercultural competency and anti-racism skills. The development of grassroots initiatives, such as the "Indigenous Trailblazers Summit," will play pivotal roles in amplifying the Indigenous voices and fostering collaboration between the Indigenous and non-Indigenous business communities. This summit aims to address key topics such as the ones below: #IndigenousEntrpreneurship #IndigenousOwned #IndigenousLeadership #CommunityEngagement

As an organization, what can you do to ensure inclusion? How can you promote wellness and truly celebrate Indigenous people in the workplace? On National Indigenous Peoples Day, I encourage you to think about this for your workplace. I continue to learn, and make mistakes, and learn some more.
On National Indigenous Peoples Day, we acknowledge and celebrate the history, heritage, resilience and diversity of First Nations, Inuit and Métis across Canada. Together, there are ways organizations can share positive community reflection, maintain wellness and change perspectives. How can we celebrate Indigenous people in the workplace? ✔️ Start with a conversation around Indigenous empowerment. Acknowledge and respect the traditions, values and customs of different Indigenous Nations in your community. ✔️Create, with the right consultations, Indigenous-specific policies and practices that support Indigenous inclusion. ✔️Provide cultural training to all employees on Indigenous history, culture, traditions, languages and experiences. ✔️Find ways to celebrate in the workplace such as attending or hosting a Pow Wow. Have a local hooper dancer, medicine person or facilitator host a cultural teaching. ✔️Invest in healing and reconciliation. Today is International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples 🌎🏹 Celebrated annually on August 9th, this day was established by the United Nations in 1994 to promote and protect the rights of the world's indigenous population. The date marks the day of the first meeting in 1982 of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations. The day is an opportunity to raise awareness about the challenges that indigenous peoples face, such as issues related to human rights, cultural preservation, and social justice. It also celebrates the rich diversity of indigenous cultures and contributions to global society. Each year, the UN selects a specific theme to focus on, highlighting different aspects of indigenous peoples' lives and challenges. The theme for the 2024 International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples is "Protecting the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in Voluntary Isolation and Initial Contact." This theme emphasizes the unique challenges faced by indigenous groups who choose to live in isolation or have limited contact with the outside world. These communities often reside in remote, resource-rich areas and are highly dependent on their natural environments. The theme highlights the importance of protecting their rights and lands, which are crucial for their survival and the preservation of cultural and linguistic diversity. 🌿 Activities around the world include cultural events, panel discussions, and other educational initiatives aimed at promoting understanding and solidarity with indigenous communities. #IndigenousPeoplesDay #indigenousrights #indigenousvoices #culturalrights

⚓️ A Missed Opportunity in Maritime UK's Diversity Pledge ⚓️ At NeurodiversAtSea.org, we have always championed the importance of diversity and inclusion within the maritime industry. So, it was with a heavy heart that we reviewed Maritime UK’s Diversity in Maritime Pledge, only to find that neurodiversity—a critical aspect of true inclusivity—has been left out. Neurodiversity is not just a buzzword; it represents a vast spectrum of individuals who bring unique perspectives, talents, and skills to our industry. By overlooking neurodiversity in this pledge, we are missing an essential opportunity to create a truly inclusive maritime sector that values and supports all its members. We deeply respect and appreciate the efforts to promote diversity across gender, race, and other important dimensions. However, we urge Maritime UK and other stakeholders to consider the significance of neurodiversity. This is not just about recognizing the challenges faced by neurodivergent individuals; it’s about embracing the strengths they bring to our industry. 🧠 Neurodiverse individuals often excel in areas such as: -Enhanced Attention to Detail: Critical for safety and operational efficiency. -Creative Problem-Solving: Driving innovation and overcoming complex challenges. -Unique Communication Styles: Fostering diverse teamwork and collaboration. At Neurodiversatsea, our mission is to ensure that neurodivergent voices are heard and valued. We invite Maritime UK to engage with us and other organizations that focus on neurodiversity, to broaden the scope of their pledge and truly reflect the full diversity of our maritime community. Together, we can create an industry where everyone, regardless of neurotype, can thrive and contribute to the future of maritime! 🌐 Learn more about our work and how we support neurodiversity in the maritime sector at https://lnkd.in/dtqJnDgu #Neurodiversatsea #Neurodiversity #DiversityInMaritime #Inclusion #MaritimeUK #Support #Awareness #InclusiveMaritime
Maritime UK Launches Diversity in Maritime Pledge Maritime UK are committed to fostering an inclusive and equitable environment within the maritime sector, where all individuals, regardless of gender, mental health status, sexual orientation, or ethnicity, feel valued, respected, and empowered.
