2 different contractors. Same environmental conditions….lots and lots of rain…what went wrong? Was it lack of knowledge? Training? Indifference? A desire to save the company $ ? What was saved now that this flower bed needs to be replanted at the Contractor’s expense? BTW, the solution was discussed before the beds were planted. One company paid attention. And the industry wonders why owners get frustrated and hire OLM. (Yes, I know the junipers look awful. A great example of how not to prune.)

Founder of Blue Collar Open Book // Attracting the next generation to the Blue Collar Trades // Blue Collar Advocate
“I accidentally found my dream job.” This was said to me today by a former educator that is now in our industry. He went on to express how after he retired from his educator role of 30+ years, he poked around and applied for a laborer position at a paving company, and it changed everything. Yes, you read that right. At this stage in his life, he actively looked for another job... IN CONSTRUCTION...AS A LABORER! A physically demanding job. I’ll be introducing you to my new friend, Jim, very soon as we are working together on a couple things. I left with this smile on my face. This was my first in person meeting for Blue Collar Open Book and I was in my new company gear. I couldn't have asked for it to go better. For now, I wanted to get your thoughts regarding a new pool of potential employees. What about the group of early retirees (those in law enforcement, teachers, etc.) that now have time they don’t know what to do with? Maybe they feel financially stable and are willing to try a new industry… Would they potentially be more dependable employees at this stage in their life? How would you feel hiring somebody knowing they only have 5 or 10 years left in them? Would you count them out? Let me know! #workforcedevelopment #dirtworld #buildyourpath #bluecollaropenbook
