🔃 What are relational approaches in philanthropy, and why do they matter? In exploring new forms of collaboration, we and our partners have found great potential in “relational approaches.” This concept focuses on building trust-based #relationships that create space for #emergence: unplanned effects resulting from interactions within complex systems. These effects could provide us with the innovative means needed to advance #transformation. While there is currently no commonly acknowledged definition of what relational approaches are in philanthropic practice, some characteristics seem to endure the discourse. For our Activity Report 2023, we created a brief introduction on relational approaches and invited in perspectives, learnings, and stories of how colleagues in philanthropy currently apply and experience relational approaches. In this, you will find contributions of: ✒ Silke Breimaier and Markus Lux from Robert Bosch Stiftung on: "Impact through relationships" ✒ Ben Rodgers of Inner North Community Foundation / Community Foundations Australia on: "Culture of relational approaches" ✒ Susan Snider of Equality Fund on: "Relational infrastructure as strategy" ✒ Hanna Stähle of Philea - Philanthropy Europe Association on: "New capacities for collective action" The introduction and their expert perspectives are freely available on https://lnkd.in/eem5mew7 Heartfelt thanks to everybody who has been involved in creating that article! This is a great article from Leah Hunt-Hendrix on #philanthropy, #donors, recipients and the concept of solidarity. A quick excerpt: "Philanthropy is often motivated by semblances of solidarity — concepts such as charity, benevolence, and altruism. These ideas differ from solidarity in that they focus on the intention of the giver, who is over and above the recipient. Philanthropy-in-solidarity imagines donors as interconnected with their grantee partners. For example, in a world where the climate is changing fast, I as a donor benefit from organizations that are fighting for a livable planet. And while racism remains endemic, and where bigotry undermines social cohesion and erodes public goods, I as a white person benefit from anti-racist activism because it helps create a more equitable world. Recognizing one’s own self-interest in this sense is not selfish — it’s leveling and equalizing because it places the donor and grantee on an even field as partners in a shared struggle." This struck a note with me because I've been asked why, as a white man, I am/can/should be leading an industry-wide #diversity initiative. This is part of the answer - I benefit from a more equitable world. We all do. Those who see others getting an equal chance as something that costs or threatens them are playing an individualist's zero-sum game. America (and the world) have always been best when we grow together, in solidarity. https://lnkd.in/eTtgQa_B #equity #equality #diversity #marketing #advertising #dataanalytics #AI
