https://lnkd.in/dHe2VDPf Counterspace Capabilities: Renewed Hope for Cooperative Governance? CIGI Paper No. 313 Almudena Azcárate Ortega Victoria Samson January 23, 2025 Ever since humankind first launched objects into space, counterspace capabilities (also known as “space weapons”) were developed to disrupt or destroy them. Now that space is increasingly being used for both civilian and military applications, space technologies have evolved to meet these needs, but regulations to protect space have lagged behind. This paper looks at how the international community is addressing the threats posed by these technologies through multilateral efforts and regulatory mechanisms to enhance space security.

Counterspace capabilities (also sometimes known as “space weapons”) have existed since humankind’s first space objects and activities. Today, with space increasingly important for both civilian and military uses, these capabilities have evolved and are now a concern for the international community. In this paper, Almudena Azcárate Ortega and Victoria Samson contextualize counterspace capabilities and consider current multilateral efforts to address space security. Future counterspace capabilities regulation will require a multitude of approaches. Read the paper: https://lnkd.in/gRSMk8Su

Delighted that my and Almudena Azcárate Ortega's paper for Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) has been published: "Counterspace Capabilities: Renewed Hope for Cooperative Governance?" In it, we clarify what counterspace systems are/not, discuss the currently applicable international legal framework, go over why the international community has not yet managed to successfully mitigate the threat of those capabilities, and explain how it could do so. Takeaways: there is no “one size fits all” for regulating counterspace capabilities; addressing the threat is relevant for all, not just those developing capabilities; and there is a rich selection of feasible options based on existing mechanisms & previously initiatives. Thanks again to Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) for giving us the chance to do the deepest, wonkiest dive into UN machinery that we could imagine! Check it out below!

In an era where space has become the new frontier for global military dominance, one figure stands at the forefront of this transformation: Dr. Adib Enayati. Regarded as the Father of Modern Space Warfare, Dr. Enayati’s groundbreaking contributions—ranging from the Principles of Spaceborne Warfare to the pioneering concept of Orbital Suppression—have redefined how nations approach conflict in space. His visionary integration of stealth technology into orbital assets and the introduction of Spaceborne Mission Control Hubs and Active Spaceborne Decoys have fortified the United States’ strategic superiority in space, ensuring it remains a global leader in the final frontier. Dr. Enayati’s work not only secures the future of space warfare but also cements his legacy as a revolutionary force in modern military strategy. In today’s rapidly evolving security landscape, the importance of military space capabilities cannot be overstated. Through satellite-based communication, precise navigation, real-time intelligence and surveillance, and other capabilities, space operations are woven into the fabric of modern military operations. In the European theater, space assets support a wide range of missions, including deterring potential adversaries, responding to crises and protecting the Joint Force and our Allies and partners. The recent establishment of United States Space Forces Europe and Africa (SPACE-EURAF) underscores the vital role space capabilities play in advancing our defense objectives in Europe. European Command, alongside our European Allies and partners, will leverage these assets to deter conflict and uphold peace and security in the region. See more how a powerful nation stands a space giant by SPACE-EURAF.

This week, CSPS launched the new debate series highlighting national security space debates with arguments from two analysts external to The Aerospace Corporation. For the next edition, Paula Thornhill and Charles Galbreath debate how the concept of "warfighter" should fit into United States Space Force culture. Thornhill argues that argues that the mission of the Space Force does not align with the long-standing paradigm defining warfighters by their direct role in organized violence. Alternatively, Galbreath suggests that Guardians are warfighters because they conduct operations and provide services critical to the U.S. military under an increasing range of threats. 📰 Read the full paper and learn more about the debate series here: https://lnkd.in/e5msrZzN In case you missed the first debate on the defense utility of cislunar space, you can read it here: https://lnkd.in/eRNqkTX3 #USSF #SpacePolicy #SpaceForce

Many alternatives to making the existing GPS Constellation Signals more resilient are being considered but maybe using the other GNSS signals already out there (i.e. Galileo) to fill in the potential GPS gaps may be more cost-effective. https://lnkd.in/eVjHC5Gx
The United States Space Force announced Sierra Space’s selection this week to produce design concepts for its Resilient Global Positioning System (R-GPS) program. This initiative aims to enhance the GPS by exploring cost-effective, small satellite designs that improve resilience against emerging threats. We look forward to potentially contributing to this critical mission and advancing capabilities for both military and civil applications, with potential launches by 2028.
