Special Session 3: Defence planning and operational needs The International Institute for Strategic Studies 8 Nov 2024 NATO and its member states have agreed to highly ambitious targets regarding the Alliance’s future operational readiness, deployment and sustainment. Meeting these objectives will require significant adjustments to national and multinational defence planning. This session will consider the progress made and the challenges to overcome at national and NATO levels.

Helsinki Security Forum 2024 opened with an engaging discussion “Towards a Total Defence of Europe.” The panel focused on how the growing complexities of societal security call for a renewed approach to total defence – one that goes beyond military concerns and engages all sectors of society. Our distinguished speakers addressed the importance of a whole-of-society approach to national defence, emphasising that preparedness must extend across every sector, including organisations, NGOs, and civilians. Moderated by Charly Salonius-Pasternak Finnish Institute of International Affairs - FIIA the panel featured: Janne Jaakkola, Chief of Defence of Puolustusvoimat - Försvarsmakten - Finnish Defence Forces Marta Kepe, Senior Defence Analyst at RAND Andrus Merilo, Chief of Defence of Estonian Defence Forces Charlotte Petri Gornitzka, Director General at MSB (Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency) Major General Andrus Merilo reminded the audience that awareness and preparedness alone are not enough to deter threats: “Situational awareness must always be translated into situational understanding.” Watch the #HSF2024 panel here: https://lnkd.in/dBuJGfum

First Plenary Session: Rethinking European Defence Requirements and Capacity The International Institute for Strategic Studies 9 Nov 2024 The Ukraine war has highlighted the need for European allies to rethink their defence requirements and strengthen their capabilities. It also necessitates new national and multinational approaches to ramping up defence-industrial bases. The ministerial panel will discuss emerging strategies and policies in European capitals to collectively enhance European defence capacity.

⚡️ Russian Defence Ministry reports on the progress of the special military operation (28 September 2024) ▫️Yesterday, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation delivered a group strike by long-range precision weaponry, Kinzhal hypersonic air-launched ballistic missile, and attack unmanned aerial vehicles at the AFU airfield infrastructure. The goal of the strike has been achieved. All the assigned targets have been engaged. ▫️In Liptsy and Volchansk directions, units of the Sever Group of Forces inflicted losses on formations of .. near Volchanskye Khutora, Liptsy, and Volchansk (Kharkov region). The AFU losses amounted to more than 60 troops, .. ▫️Units of the Zapad Group of Forces improved the tactical situation and inflicted losses on .. near Kupyansk, Podvysokoye, Novoosinovo (Kharkov region), Makeyevka, Nevskoye (Lugansk People's Republic), and Torskoye (Donetsk People's Republic). The AFU losses amounted to up to 400 troops, .. ▫️Units of the Yug Group of Forces took more advantageous lines and inflicted losses on manpower and hardware of formations of the .. near Konstantinovka, Vysokoivanovka, Zaliznyanskoye, Druzhkovka, Kurakhovo, Grigorovka, and Chasov Yar (Donetsk People's Republic). Eight counter-attacks launched by .. were repelled. The AFU losses amounted to up to 725 troops, .. ▫️Units of the Tsentr Group of Forces took more advantageous lines and inflicted losses on .. near Gornyak, Dzerzhinsk, Kalinovo, Sukhaya Balka, and Rozovka (Donetsk People's Republic). Seven counter-attacks launched by .. were repelled. The AFU losses amounted to more than 620 troops, ... ▫️Units of the Vostok Group of Forces improved the tactical situation along the front line and inflicted losses on .. near Dobrovolye, Rovnopol, and Zolotaya Niva (Donetsk People's Republic). Three counter-attacks launched by .. were repelled. The AFU losses amounted to up to 125 troops, .. ▫️Units of the Dnepr Group of Forces inflicted losses on formations of .. near Kopani (Zaporozhye region), Antonovka (Kherson region), and Kherson. The government has finally rolled out the latest edition of the IIP post Defence Strategic Review, presenting it to the public today. For those with a keen interest in the intricacies of the Defence industry, this release holds significance, offering valuable insights into the aftermath of the review process. I am keen to see the analysis of what fell out of the plan on the way through. #defence #defenceindustry
