A former colleauge recently posted a survey inquiring how people rate their current leader’s engagement/style. I was surprised to see the results …almost 47% of survey participants rated their current leader 1-2 on effective leadership & engagement (on a scale of 1-5…5 being most positive). So many organizations are moving fast, trying to accomplish more, with reduced resources. This focus on execution has diluted the value of “how” you get teams to execution. How you engage as a leader is just as important as what you deliver. Just a reminder to all us leaders…driving results doesn’t have to risk psychological safety. Be kind. Be respectful.

I spent yesterday evening catching up with a dear friend and colleague. At one point our conversation turned to a discussion on potential, and how the best leaders create an environment where everyone has an opportunity to reach their potential. Sometimes that may even mean finding a different role or organization that is a better match to their potential. As she reminded me, the best leaders have the kindness to be transparent and the courage to be truthful when they see an opportunity to provide feedback to help their team members grow. As leaders, our #1 job is to support the people who work for us and to create an environment where they can have the confidence to learn and be successful! #leadership #psychologicalsafety

In today’s workplaces, where conversations about strategy and brand intersect with touchy social issues, it can be very difficult to get people to share what they really think. One of the things I’ve realized over time is that giving people a sense of psychological safety is one of the most important things a leader can do. If someone knows that they’re not going to be punished for saying or thinking something authentic, they will be much more likely to contribute things of actual value. Psychological safety has been a "catch phrase" since the 1950s. Many of the organizations and leaders who I engage with in training sessions either fear it or perceive it as submitting to the employees. A key characteristic of high-performance organizational cultures is accountability! There is a critical balance between psychological safety and accountability. Optimal performance is attained when leaders create the appropriate level of psychological safety while still having accountability for performance.
