I my opinion, I frankly don't think the idea of having High-speed Gautrain to Cape Town is economically viable for South Africa currently considering the stumbling economy. High-speed trains are more expensive to operate and maintain, when compared to air travel over similar distances. South Africa (SA) really need to consider more investments to grow the country's economy and have more financial stability. This can be done in various ways: Economic planning; Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) to express it's mandate; and through ensuring that the country meet specific trade and investment requirements of prospective investors around the world etc. Catch the Gautrain to Cape Town?

I just got back from almost two weeks in Belgium and France. The longest time I’ve been fully disconnected from work since before Covid. The biggest things I noticed from an infrastructure basis was the lack of space that they make work and the dramatic efficiency of their transit systems. I know people will say Canada is too big and Canada is too cold. But think about it…the entire country of Belgium fits in the area from approximately Barrie to Niagara to Kitchener/Waterloo and similar populations….so why can I jump on a train every 10 minutes from Brussels to Bruges or Antwerp all day long but if I want to go from Guelph to Toronto I have a few trains in the morning and a few in the evening. If we want to be better we need focus on transit and move away from our car dependency. The way to solving the housing affordability issues isn’t through subdivisions…it is through apartments, condos, transit and shortening the distances between where we live work and play. #infrastructure #reconstruction #density #practicalinnovation #customerservice #quality

New Zealand greenlights $6.2bn transport upgrade in Canterbury The town of Ashburton, 50km southwest of Christchurch (Andrew Cooper/CC BY 3.0) #NewZealand has approved a 10-year plan to upgrade the #transport system in the #Canterbury Region, which includes the city of #Christchurch. The programme is expected to cost US$6.2bn, of which $2.6bn will come from central government. Among the projects approved is a second bridge over the Ashburton River and a bypass for the town of Woodend, about 20km north of Christchurch. Flooding of the River Rangitata in 2019 damaged roads, rails, farms and the electricity supply. The region wants to increase road capacity because the population of the Greater Christchurch area is expected to grow by 150,000 over the next 30 years, reaching around 640,000. Some 12.5 million passenger trips were taken on the regional public transport network in 2023 and this year that’s expected to reach 14 million, according to Environment Canterbury. Meanwhile, the percentage of people using public transport has grown from 18% to 24%. https://lnkd.in/ec-eceBS
