Spotlight on Farm Safety Week: Prioritising Health and Safety at Sovereign Turf This year’s Farm Safety Week focuses on the crucial issue of near misses, an ongoing challenge in our industry. While we offer incentives for reporting near misses, we recognize there's still much more to be done. That's why we fully support this cause and are eager to adopt new strategies and trials to enhance near miss reporting. To mark Farm Safety Week 2024, we interviewed our newest recruit, Dylan, who started as a Farm Apprentice just two weeks ago. With health and safety training fresh on his mind, here's what he had to say: "The training was really informative and easy to understand, with thorough assessments for every risk. I was surprised by just how much there was. I thought Sovereign Turf's training was amazing. It's only when you get out working on the farm that you fully understand why these dos and don'ts are so important." Dylan's training included the mandatory videos, presentations, and documents in the office. He also received extensive verbal safety briefings from our Farm Director, Jack, on potential dangers. Dylan is being mentored by Richard, one of our seasoned farmhands, who emphasises constant vigilance to prevent near misses. Dylan shared: "Richard is always emphasising checking my surroundings to prevent near misses. Before I do anything, Richard asks me to stop and says, 'Look around; is anyone around? Keep looking around. Check again.' Near miss learning is fresh and new to me, and it’s at the forefront of everything I am doing.” Hearing real-life stories about when things have gone wrong has also impacted Dylan. He said, "Your body and your life are more important than a tractor. Hearing stories about what's happened to others changes your approach and makes you take things seriously." Dylan's Top Tips:  Always Ask: Don’t be afraid to ask a manager how to do something the right way.  Rehear & Replay: Constantly replay what you’ve learned and heard. Always double-check with your mentor—can I do this? Sense-checking helps reduce accidents. Dylan's early journey in farming highlights the importance of taking a moment to stop and check. “Don’t Learn Safety by Accident” theme for National Farm Safety and Health Week For the 80th year in a row, the United States is celebrating National Farm Safety and Health Week (NFSHW) during the third week of September — this year it takes place September 15-21. NFSHW is a time to increase awareness of the high injury and fatality risk in agriculture and to improve agricultural health outcomes through outreach and education. Data from the Census of Fatal Occupational Injury shows that in 2022 the agriculture, forestry, and fishing industries had the highest rate of fatal work injuries compared to other occupations, at 23.5 deaths per 100,000 full-time workers — the majority due to incidents with transportation or equipment (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2023). The Irish Farmers Journal highlights some farm safety tips to keep in mind as farmers enter their busiest season. 👉Be aware of newly calved cows out in paddocks, as they will be protective of calves and can become aggressive quickly and there are limited options to escape when out in a field. 👉Stock bulls will be out in fields as breeding gets underway. When checking animals, give bulls plenty of space to avoid aggravating them. 👉Make sure tractors and trailers are roadworthy, inspect tyres and replace if needed. Check tractor and trailer lights are working. Make sure tractors are properly balanced with front weights when under load as this can affect grip on sloped ground as well as braking efficiency. 👉Make sure machinery kit such as the mower, baler, rake and tedder all have safety guards in place before use. A new ‘easy entry’ calf trailer gate is set to help reduce sprain and strain injuries on dairy farms. 🙌 “Farmers are often injured when they’re feeding calves, collecting them from the paddock, or when they slip or trip on uneven ground or slippery concrete,” says DairyNZ's Brian Dela Rue. “These injuries can have an impact on farm teams, with people needing 12 days off on average.” “Understanding where these injuries occurred helped us work with farmers and a team of specialists to co-design practical solutions, like the easy entry calf gate, to improve day-to-day calving activities.” The key feature is the hands-free spring-loaded saloon doors which make loading calves quicker, easier and safer. The trailer gate was developed by DairyNZ with the help of a $900,000 ACC Workplace Injury Prevention Grant and was co-designed with input from both farmers and workplace and farm systems specialists.
