🙌 Only three more days until the EU #OpenFoodConference in Leuven starts! Looking forward to having fruitful conversations about the future of food policy! As we at Agora Agrar are currently writing a study about the role of the land use sector and food systems in a climate neutral Europe, I am particularly curious to exchange about EU food policy, such as: - 🥗 Policies to strengthen fair #foodenvironments – from #publicprocurement to regulating the #marketing environment and #labelling - ⚖ the future of the needed legislative framework for #sustainable #foodsystems (#SFSLaw) - 💶 #Social policies to reduce #foodpoverty - 🌱 Protein diversification strategies and the role of alternative proteins (#AltPro) - 🗑 #FoodWaste Reduction strategies, including better monitoring, strategies to reduce #foodloss at farm level and possible ways to (re-)allow safe use of catering waste as feed for animals. 🇩🇪 I am also happy to share insights about the progress and processes within food policy in #Germany. The past months have been very dynamic 🎉 ! Here some highlights: - 📃 The German government has published the federal #foodstrategy, - 🥕German nutrition guidelines #FBDG were updated by @DGE – based on a mathematical model and for the first time including environmental considerations in the calculation, - 🏛️ the publication of very progressive results of the first citizen council (#Bürgerrat Ernährung) that was put in place by the German Parliament and summarized key requirements to develop food policy, - 👨👨👦 🏘 progress to put food policy on the local agenda, - 🥜 start of a 38 Mio Euro program to diversify protein supply and support alternative proteins. 💬 💡 Last but not least: I am very curious to learn what food policies and instruments are currently debated in other countries (particularly Central and Eastern Europe). https://lnkd.in/dXdWCN6s Alexandra Nikolakopoulou John Bell Sergi Corbalán Alex Holst Erik Mathijs Pierre-Marie Aubert Isabel Paliotta Anja Katalin De Cunto Fabian Richter Marina Schmidt 🍎🍏 Zoe Heuschkel Anna Wissmann Stefanie Vandevijvere Peter Defranceschi Thomas Legge Pete Ritchie Christian Reynolds Madeleine Coste Peter Sousa Hoejskov Orsolya Diófási-Kovács, Phd Eva Blaho Fabrice DeClerck Hannah Nohlen Dirk Jacobs Cortney Price Anna Handschuh Alba Gil Camille PERRIN Charlie Brocard Andreas Thurner European Alliance for Plant-based Foods Caroline Amrom Martin Bowman Nikolai Pushkarev Nusa Urbancic Nathalie Bolduc Jessica Duncan Michael Minter Ben Reynolds

Together with my colleagues Jacqueline Broerse, Luka Gudek, and Madhura Rao, PhD, I recently had the chance to attend the FOOD 2030 Conference on Green & Resilient Food Systems in Brussels. As part of the side event titled "FOOD 2030 Networks side-event: Evidence-based policy making and systemic solutions for transforming the food system", #CLEVERFOOD and FoodPaTHS co-organised a session that delved into the crucial question of what governance principles need to be established and what challenges need to be addressed to effectively transform our food systems at the local, national, European, and global levels. During our thought-provoking discussion, we underscored the profound impact of power and politics on the shaping of our current and future food systems. As we embark on this transformative journey, it is essential to foster open dialogue, transparency, and advocacy for evidence-based policies that align with our shared aspirations for a sustainable, equitable, and just food future. However, it also became clear that while the potential for positive change is undeniable, navigating the complexities of vested interests and global governance structures necessitates enabling approaches that empower diverse stakeholders to meaningfully influence the decision-making processes that shape our food systems at different levels.

#justtransition is indeed gaining traction and depending upon the stakeholder's perspective, it is either just an idea at the moment or already recognized as an imperative. Great insights Kanika Kochhar, and a clear conclusion: it is, in my view, applicable not just to the global food systems but even at a more broader level.
How I learned about a system I knew nothing about - Global Food Systems: I had the opportunity to attend an enlightening event last Friday focused on Global Food Systems. As we work on compiling a report (similar to a White Paper) based on the event, my curiosity deepened regarding Global Food Systems and the ethical and sustainability issues surrounding them. Hosted by the Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurship and the Oxford Martin School Programme on the Future of Food, with the support of Nestlé, the event brought together professionals from various sectors. Discussions centered on actionable research insights, best practices, and ongoing challenges as we strive for a Just Transition in Global Food Systems. 1. Watching YouTube videos: Seeking a preliminary understanding and kindling my interest, I watched trending YouTube videos. This helped me form initial ideas and gain an overall perspective. 2. Reading the news: Exploring current events, stakeholders, and those working on Global Food Systems, I delved into news articles. 3. Reading Research Papers: Though initially challenging, reading research papers on Global Food Systems gradually became more familiar, helping me grasp the language, terminologies, and concepts. But what truly illuminated the nuances and trade-offs in the system was the Friday event. Learning firsthand from practitioners and researchers dedicated to this field brought to life everything I had been reading and listening to in the past month. This photo is from the event where Kanika Kochhar, Echika Obijiaku, and I collaborated to capture all the interesting points. We're leveraging these insights to create the White Paper, and I'm excited to share it with you soon! Kudos to the team for pulling off such a cool event: Marya Hill-Popper Besharov, Abrar Chaudhury, Jessica Jacobson, and Menna Clarke. Thank you for your support Cherry Agarwal Anna Williams!! A heartfelt thank you to our outstanding speakers for their authenticity and passion. They truly brought to life rich and meaningful conversations about Global Food Systems at SBS: Duncan Williamson Monika Zurek Matthew Amengual Juliane Reinecke Cliodhnagh Conlon Chris Hogg Jim Woodhill Dr. Lexi Earl It was a wonderful experience meeting individuals actively engaged in this field, each offering a distinct and valuable perspective. A heartfelt thank you to Sourajit Aiyer, Kaya Axelsson, Ammad Bahalim, Richard Hall, Mahreen Khan, Dr. Ayesha Khan, Zeeshan Suhail, Cyrus Suntook, Chloë Payne and Robin Sundaram for generously sharing their insights. #GlobalFoodSystem #SocialImpact #ESG

Last week I participated in the 10th Edition of Eating City Summer Campus where with a team of young students and professionals we discussed the current status of the European Food System. We particularly debated around the key role public food procurement (PFP) plays in advancing to a healthy, sustainable, fair and prosperous food system which resulted in a declaration directed to policymakers. In our call for action, we ask to focus on the ingredients we source, people involved in PFP and the technology that can empower the much needed transition. As a researcher in food and nutrition with a focus on consumer protection, I want to highlight this phrase and commit to continue working on this: “Food choices are often time-constrained and shaped by a large range of physical, financial, political, and sociocultural influences, most of which are beyond an individual’s control. By deciding what is offered and consumed in public places—such as schools, hospitals, and government institutions—public entities can drive demand for sustainable, nutritious products, contributing to rebalancing the distribution of power relations along the value chain.” #publicfoodprocurement #EUfoodpolicy #sustainablefoodsystem #foodliteracy #consumerprotection
